They opted out on their own. Miami would have had birds rights. This guy wrote a shifty article.
They also chose this position themselves

I don't agree with Lowe at all here
ETA: I should note that I'm against max contracts. The market should decide what a player is worth

Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean it's a shitty article.

This X10000000
Max deals and everything else in the new CBA were supposed to create a more competitive and profitable league for everyone. But that is not the case. Now you have two players that can control your entire league. I know the MLB and NFL are much larger and there is more money, but seeing how things are going just is stupid.
1. No more lottery at the very least just a straight up draft order based off of record/finish.
2. 16 team playoff no more divisions or conferences.
3. Make it to where international players that have played professionally do not go through the draft but in a bid or acquisition method.
4. No more max deals, or any limits to player years. Let the market dictate the price, that way a smaller market team truly has a chance if they want to offer a Lebron $35 million a year and Miami does not want to match it to stay competitive it is the player's decision.
5. Extend the NBA draft to 3 rounds and make every team have a DL affiliate. Improves the level of play in the long run. Make the draft rule straight out of high school or 3 years.

Unfortunately, the owners need to be protected from themselves. The NBA is lucky not to have any Pujols/ARod contracts.

LA and NY love this approach

NBA would be different than the MLB. Much harder to predict how an overseas basketball player will perform in the NBA than an overseas baseball player in the MLB.
In regards to owners wanting to protect themselves from their own doing, that hurts responsible owners.
If an owner wants to bring Andrea Barganiani over and pay him $10 million a year. So be it but don't punish other owners for their mistake.
As it is now their is no "market". Players are basically slotted into values the minute they come into the league. Even large market teams are finding it harder and harder like Dallas or Atlanta.
The NBA has almost become unbearable to watch or even talk about it. Yes the goal is always a championship but fans no longer care whether a team makes the playoffs, thanks to people like Bill Simmons a 4 seed or lower no longer matters because only 3 or 4 teams at best have a shot at winning the championship. So the other 26 teams and that would be his theory should every year just absolutely tank it, until in 3 years they have a similar core to Durant, Westbrook, Ibaka, and Harden.
Personally I am a Pelicans fan and recently bought two season tickets this year. I am in college in New Orleans and been a lifelong New Orleans basketball fan. Because of the moves they made and the team they have assembled, I would be okay with a playoff team. I know we are not going to win a championship this year. But would rather support a team that respects me enough as a fan to not tank it.
Filing basketball bankruptcy and choosing to actually tell your fans, hey we are going to lose on purpose for 2-3 years stick with us, well that is great only problem is 7-8 other teams are doing it.

The NBA has a salary cap though so they won't be giving out $200MM contracts like they're pocket change

Actually only 3 or 4 teams lost money last year.

That would encourage even more teams to tank. But I do agree the draft needs a bit of fixing.

No more divisions are fine but don't know about conferences.

On the fence but I see the logic

On the fence about this as well.
I wouldn't mind a franchise tag though.

I could get behind this.
They'll probably start with a 2 or high school though.

pretty sure miami has bird's rights
but they can't sign all 3 AND improve the roster unless they come in under the cap, b/c the team needs that gap b/w their salaries and the salary cap to sign that help

If you keep the salary cap but do away with max contracts, guys would have to make some serious decisions, and the Super Team thing would be much harder to pull off, not that that is necessarily the best thing for the NBA though.

Unfortunately, the owners need to be protected from themselves
While no max would help the elite players and be the most fair way to do business, the max contract deals do help the lesser players and majority of players in general.

Actually, they need them all to come in over the cap so that they can use they exceptions that they agreed to sign Granger and McRoberts into. Otherwise, they'll have to use cap space to sign them and they lose the MLE.

Oh boo fricking hoo Zach Lowe. These players have to decide between rigging the league or taking a ton of money? What a joke.

Pretty much. If the owners did anything similar, it would be considered collusion.
They should at least increase the amounts of max contracts.

The players, I would imagine. The NBPA would rather have a couple dozen top-tier players be limited in terms of their compensation than have the bulk of their mid-low tier guys take a hit. With no max contracts, the owners would still be protected from themselves by a hard cap anyway.

The players,
False.
Kevin Garnett's 6/126 contract in 98 triggered the 98/99 lockout. Owners pushed hard for max salaries. Ewing was the president of the players' union. He did not want them, but rank and file did. I think they agreed to max salaries, but got the 57/43 BRI split in that negotiation.

It's not about that. It's about players having $$$ to rival owners. If you're paying LeBron $40-$50M a year, he is no longer an employee but an equal.
