I want to put up a fence in my back yard, is it legal for me to board on to my neighbors fences. I talked to my contractor building my patio and he said I don't have to ask their permission because it is on the property line? Does anyone know if this is correct?

Maybe do them a courtesy and just talk to them about it.

Also call 811 or whatever it is before you dig

Courtesy to ask, and you can always just put your fence next to theirs, not necessarily on it.

I tethered into my neighbors fence with no questions asked.

I am not sure why you would want to do this without talking with them first...

fwiw, fences are not typically exactly on the property line...

If it's on the line then that's your side of the fence to do with as you please but

I have talked to two of them and they said no problem. One them has a note on the door that says do not knock or ring doorbell. I think they have an autistic child, I never see them.

By tethered do you mean just attached your boards on to the 2x4's. also is Cedar worth the money, I just built an outdoor kitchen and patio along with a pool and trying to put up a better looking fence without having to dig all the holes and shite.

It depends what side of the line the fence is on. If it is on your side, you don't have to ask shite. If it is on his side, you do.

Either way, you're better off just asking.

Yes it is but what happens to you if they decide to teardown their fence one day?

Leave a note for them asking them to call you, its not that hard!

I used cedar and during the first year or so it looked awesome and smelled great after a rain. Now however, it doesn't look/smell any different than the cheaper pine fences I see. I've been told it will hold up better than pine though. So there's that, if it's true.

Chances are the fence isn't directly on the property line. I'd be willing to bet it's at minimum a few inches to either side. Talk to your neighbor first.

False, kinda. Although the difference in toughness in cedar and pine is not much. The treated pine planks are a little heavier duty than the cedar and are less brittle as the fence gets years on it. That being said the cedar wood will not warp as much in the heat as the pine will and will look better as long as kids or dogs aren't beating the hell out it over time.

Are you talking about nailing on to his stringers and using his posts?
