Is soccer in the US close to surpassing hockey as the 4th sport?

I feel as though way more kids play soccer than hockey. Average MLS attendance is higher than NHL. NHL has better tv ratings, but that is because most kids watch the European leagues. What do ya'll think?

Cowherd believes so. Even thinks that baseball should watch out.

I'd say it already has. At least in this part of the country, I don't know anyone that watches or cares about hockey.

The MLS won't pass the NHL. However, I would say more Americans care about soccer than hockey.

I think it already has, at least where I am. If you ask the general public who Leo Messi is, they can tell you that he's a soccer player. If you ask them who Sidney Crosby is, they wouldn't have a clue.

Average attendance is close (17,695 vs 21,096) I think soccer is close but main thing is sustainability....

Last year Hockey had 17,721 and MLS averaged 18,594....

Ratings I'm not 100% sure if hockey beats them but the playoffs I am sure they dominate MLS

Stanley cup averages a little less than 3 million viewers, mls cup is close to 1 mil over the past few years. In 10 years I wouldn't be surprised if MLS passed that.

People who don't watch any of the NHL regular season love watching the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Having a national team that plays regularly helps the popularity of the sport. I've never seen a U.S. hockey game outside of the olympics.

But weighing the popularity of soccer to hockey by comparing MLS to NHL numbers is misleading because of all the international soccer leagues which are very accessible in the states now.

Using MLS Cup as a barometer is like using the Big 12 tournament Final as a barometer for NCAA basketball success.

MLS Cup *might* be the 25th most important soccer viewing event in a given year.

Read the OP, I understand MLS isn't as popular as EPL and so forth.

I believe that soccer has much more room to grown than hockey. Since you are pretty limited to where you can play hockey in this country not many people have knowledge of the sport. I have no idea what icing or powerplays are.

the champions league final has been covering between 1.9 - almost 3 million the past three years, so its close to a push.

I live in a city that has an NHL team and have attended a few games over the years. But I really don't care about hockey at all beyond the Preds. Even then I prefer soccer, especially as a televised sport. I didn't watch a single minute of playoff hockey this year but I got up to watch 6AM Saturday morning EPL games for most of the season. And lest you make another one of those "older generation" assumptions I keep seeing in these threads, I didn't start following soccer until I was in my late 40's...

IIRC, wasn't that only televised by Fox Soccer for a couple of those years, which was not part of a base subscription package...

to me its NFL/NCAAF, baseball, hockey, non-mls soccer.

it's a personal opinion. I don't like basketball that much.

By the looks and content of ESPN´s baseball adverts this past weekend, it seems they also think the same.
