do you think that its creators or players imagined a game whose score would so often end up 0-0, 1-0 or even 2-1? Is this what kids on the playground play for now?

I just looked back on the history of the FIFA World Cup. In the early days, World Cup matches averaged over 4.5 goals per game, even over 5.5 in 1938, I believe. In 1958, Brazil beat Sweden 5-2 in the final. In 1966's final, England beat West Germany 4-2.

By contrast, the last six World Cup finals have been 1-0, 0-0, 3-0, 2-0, 1-1, 1-0.... a mere goal and half per contest.

Is this the game you really want?

In 1968, Bob Gibson posted a 1.12 ERA and won the Cy Young in the National League. Alarmed that its scoring had taken a nose dive, Major League Baseball made structural changes. Alarmed that its own scoring has made a dramatic fall, the NCAA this year has made promises to change the baseball. When Wimbledon became a snore fest of aces from giant servers they changed the ball and the grass.

Is there any way to convince you that something should be done to increase soccer scoring?

Aren't you the guy who said that soccer should be played with less players on each side because things were too crowded?

I'm gonna pass on this line of thinking. This World Cup has been fantastic, there's a lot more to the game than you are suggesting.

That's correct. I think it would make for a more entertaining game than merely increasing the size of the net, as was someone else's suggestion.

Can you appreciate that a lot of Americans (i.e. most) are turned off by soccer because of a lack of scoring?

Now, what about the question... Is this the game that early soccer players imagined?

Is any sport the same as when it was conceived?

Sports are constantly changing because of players, coaches, tactics, etc. There was a time in football when if a team scored 17 points that was considered a lot.

As humans we have gotten stronger, faster, and adjusted how we play all sports.

I'm not into criticizing a sport for the sake of making fun of its fans. I actually want to like the sport because it is oh so close to being there for me. It's frustrating.

A. Please frick off and die
B. Failing A: read Paul Gardner's "The Simplest Game" or Jonathan Wilson's "Inverting The Pyramid" and get back with us.

Soccer has undergone some notable changes in it's structure, notably it used to be illegal to pass the ball forward.

The most recent of these tweaks happened in 2005, when the offside law was changes to give more of an advantage to the attacking player.

So, to answer your question: No, this is not the game that the originators of soccer had in mind. It is much more advanced, has subleties and nuances and is more attacking in nature than the original soccer games did.

Yet this World Cup is 1 of the highest of all time in terms of goal scoring

And the biggest difference between now and what it was in the 1950s is that there is a lot more balance overall in the sport. Back in the 1950s, you had loaded teams going up against horrible teams in the WC. Now a days, there arent too many horrible teams that make it to the WC. In that 1954 World Cup, you had teams like Hungary who scored 17 goals in the group stage alone.

The balance overall is much better in the sport, making games tighter. Plus the evolution of the goal keeper has made it ridiculously tough to score.

Certainly true, and it's probably the primary reason soccer scores have nosedived.

It is my true belief that you could take America's best athletes who have never previously played soccer, practice them up for a bit, send them out on the soccer field, and they'd be lights out on defense. They may not score, and probably wouldn't, but they'd be just about as good as anybody else on defense.

Can you appreciate that the rest of the world doesn't give a frick and is probably as much turned off by having 3 hours of commercial interruption in a 4 hour sporting event.

I checked. It's about 2.5 goals per game. These quarterfinals were even lower.

Its 2.65 per match. And it was higher before these quarter finals. On pace to be 1 of the highest scoring ever.

And by the way, you can take any sport and go through the average points per game by year and you will see a major difference between now and back in the 50s-60s.

Humans evolve, the things we do evolve.

Yes, just yes. America's most talented athletes are playing something else. It's silly to think Tyrann Mathieu or Darren Sproles or Desean Jackson wouldn't be as good or as fast with their feet as those players on the USMNT.
