Argentina because Messi is the best player of all-time and deserves to recognized as so.

Can't lose with Dutch, Belgium, France, and Colombia. CR has no shot, imo. Brazil is Brazil. Don't care for Argentina. I'm bleh on Germany.

2nd at best. He's got to win the WC for people to put him over maradona at 3rd.

Nope.

Because...

Nope.

Messi's club achievements blow Maradona out of the water.

He's not a better player than zizou. It's not even unanimous he's the best player in the world right now.

Doesn't matter. WC >>>> ECL >>>>>> any league title. Messi has also benefitted from playing for playing for one of the best clubs in the world for his entire career. Maradona played for Napoli most of his.

Ticos.

Maradona played for Argentinos Juniors, Barcelona, Napoli, Boca. Napoli were really in the thick of it in the 1980s and early 1990s, no shame in playing there. Serie A was the place to be at those times.

Not that I like Maradona, but I respected his talent as a player, on the field (but for the Hand of God)

In terms of popularity, no doubt.

In terms of gauging how good a player is, ECL >>> WC.

Messi scores more unassisted goals than Ronaldo

All true, but even back then Napoli isn't even in the same discussion, talent wise, as Barca right now. If you want to be considered the GOAT you have to win a WC, especially if you're from a country like Argentina.

Messi is top 5 already, IMO, but to get the top spot he has to bring home the biggest trophy in the game. One that Zidane, Pele, and Maradona all did.

So? He still isn't considered, hands down, the best in the world right now. I think he's better than CR, but not everyone agrees. All the guys I say are above messi on the GOAT lost right now were all considered the best in the world for a decade+.

That's a terrible argument. That's like saying Larry Holmes was better than Ali & Tyson because he held the heavyweight belt longer than both of them.

ETA: And even then, Messi has won the ballon d'Or 4 times in the last 5 years. The one time he didn't win it, he missed some time due to injury.

No, THIS is a terrible argument. Comparing boxing to soccer, in terms of sustained talent in the sport, is laughable.

Belgium over Argentina - Belgium play good attacking football and are a class act (Kompany, etc).

France over Germany - historical subtext makes me pull for France

Columbia over Brazil - Ha-mez Rodgriguez is the best player of the tournament and the way they attack is great to watch

Dutch over Costa Rica - CONCACAF Thunder be damned, I want to see the better team make it to the Semis

I root for Messi (and thus Argentina in this WC) because I just find the way he plays is almost magical.

He may or may not be the best of all times, or even of right now. That's a kind of subjective determination that opinions can differ on.

But just to watch him face up and take on defenders one on one or even take on more than one defender is just fun to watch. Sure there are others who make beautiful plays and score thrilling goals. But to watch Messi navigate through traffic using footwork the way he does is above and beyond.

But for the overall question - most of the teams left are great and are exciting to watch. So I have a feeling that for the non Argentine games I'll take them one at a time and just enjoy the play. Usually I find myself pulling for one or the other based on the flow of the game.

I wasn't comparing soccer to boxing, I was pointing out a fallacy in your argument.
