AT&T's new lower pricing on mobile share plans.

AT&T has been advertising new lower pricing again on their mobile share plans. The new plans saved me $20 a month. I changed a 2 line family plan to mobile share about 6 months back and went from $130 to $95 per month while increasing my data from 200MB to 1GB. With their new plans I kept the same 1GB shared for 2 phones and the price went from $95 to $75 per month. So in about 6 months time the price on my plan has gone down over 40% while getting an increase in data. If you haven't checked your plan lately you really should. You can probably get more service for a lot less money. Verify with a sales rep, but these changes didn't affect my contract length.

Can you send a link or something. We are doing the 4 for 160 thing. Is it lower now?
Posted on 7/2/14 at 10:19 am to Hu_Flung_Pu
It looks like 4/$160 is the current price for 10GB LINK
I just know I moved to mobile share when it first came out and the new prices for me are lower.

I moved to mobile share and I'm saving $30 a month. I had to part with my unlimited data but getting capped at 5GB isn't exactly unlimited anyway. My wife and I share 10 and don't really get close to that.

don't you lose discounted upgrades though?
Meaning new iPhone would be $650 instead of $199

After my failed T-mobile experiment, I need to look at ATT. I need to find someone to join a family plan with me and bring my Nexus 5 over. $130, 10gb, 2 lines, $65 each, I think I can handle that.
edit: And on the premier site, it's showing m 20% corporate discount comes off mobile share value plan, so 2 lines, 10gb, $110.

That's the rub. You go full price or you do the next plan.
It's still worth looking at though, just to get off the upgrade cycle. The Next plan isn't so bad as long as you pay the phone off and keep it/sell it (as opposed handing it over to ATT). I'm still saving money and the only thing I had to part with was "unlimited" data.
ETA: Disclaimer. I could be missing something. ATT loves their "fine print"

They offer a 24 month 0% payment plan. You can take advantage of that or go back to the previous "upgrade" set up. I did the math in a thread the other day and if you have 10GB or more you are better off using the payment plan, less than 10GB and you do better with the standard upgrade plan. Just look at the phone you are considering and run the numbers.
The good thing about these new plans is they give you actual choices. If you want to upgrade regularly you can, and if you want to go cheap and buy a $59 Windows phone and use it until it dies you can. We were all paying for upgrades before whether we upgraded our phones or not.

Their data plans are cheaper, but you have to pay full price for a new phone.

This.
ATT irritates the crap out of me from time to time but they've really done right by their customers on this.

You paid full price before, you just didn't know it, and if you didn't upgrade regularly you paid more than full price. "Free" phones aren't really free.

This is the situation I was in. I've been sitting on my wife's upgrade since October because she doesn't really care and I've been waiting for the next iPhone (or a new android flagship to woo me away from Apple).
Sat down and realized that I was pissing away money paying for an upgrade that I hadn't exercised.
Now, I can upgrade every week if I want to (and I'm willing/able to pay the current phone off) and my wife can sit on her beat up 4S until the end of time.

So how does the next plan work? I know you pay it off but if you want to upgrade sooner how do they determine the difference?
Do you start over the payments if you get a new phone or do they add what you already paid to it?

Switch to Cricket Wireless. Owned by AT&T so runs on the same network. You can get 500mb plan for $35 (with autopay)2.5 gb plan for $45, and 5gb for $55,fees and taxes included. If you're ok with buying your own phone up front it's the way to go. A second line on the account is $10 less, third line $20, etc, up to 5 lines I believe.

So I got a Note 3 in January. Love it. I got the 20 month plan, at which time, I will have the phone paid off.
At 12 months, though, I can turn it in and upgrade and start a new cycle. I'm cool with that.
However, I'm paying $55 a month for 2GB and another $25 a month for using a smartphone. This does not include the cost of the phone. Is this still about right on price, or has it gone down?

Currently you're paying either $15 or $25 per month per phone line depending on your data plan. If you go with the traditional upgrade, that figure gets bumped to $40 per month, you pay your $199 and get your phone "free". If you stay on AT&T Next instead, you'll pick a payment plan (I think 18 and 24 months), pay your $15/$25 per month for your phone line, and for the length of your payment plan pay installments on the phone, so $649/24 = $27 per month. Once you've paid it off you're back to just the $15/$25 per month where as if you chose to upgrade you're back on the upgrade track and lose money if you don't upgrade regularly.

Check the link I posted. 2GB is now $40 + $25 per line, so you'd save $15 per month for the same service by changing to the new share plan.

But the Next program was so that you can upgrade early and as often as you want. What if you upgrade yearly prior to finishing off your other phone?

I'm not sure, but the way I'm reading this is that if your phone is in good enough condition to trade in, they'll let you trade in and then essentially start a new payment plan on the new phone.
quote:
Step 3: Any time after 12 or 18 monthly installments, you may upgrade to a new AT&T Next smartphone! As long as your current smartphone is in good and working condition, you are eligible to upgrade to a brand new one. Or, you can choose to keep your current smartphone, and after 20 monthly installments (AT&T Next 12) or 24 monthly installments (AT&T Next 18), your smartphone is paid for, and no more installments are required.

This website makes it easier to see how the plan plays out. Note, if you select ATT Next plans, you'll have a monthly device charge ~$32/mo for a flagship device.
