He can be entertaining on occasion, but this was like... the inverse of people being soccer snobs.

He is a douche, but some of what he was saying is true.

Regardless of me hating Olbermann or not

I agree/disagree with:

1. Completely agree
2. Completely DO NOT frickING AGREE - American TV Announcers are by and large awful as frick
3. Indifferent because it makes no sense to what he's saying. Haven't heard of anyone tearing down another sport to promote soccer
4. Meh...no opinion
5. Agree here to some degree - i hate emulating the names of Euro teams. Be original
6. I hate FIFA, BUT you can't have soccer without FIFA
7. Agree on marketing the sport to get more kids playing. I.E. Video games being the most popular of sports games.

The only thing that he said worthwhile was to stay away from FIFA. A 3 year old knows this.

His main points were americanizing the sport which i sort of agree with but do not at all agree with.

Putting an American spin on names might help, however i think luring bigger named Euro players to teams in the US with quirky names is tougher. They go with familiarity perhaps in pitching the idea of David Villa or other euro stars playing for FC Dallas instead of the Dallas Shitkickers or something. We don't have to americanize it that much, but i can see the idea that emulation is a bad thing.

FWIW i call it the field, not a pitch. I call it a jersey not a "kit".

We'll always have our own unique stamp on it. We enjoy pissing off the rest of the world too much not to.

soccer snobs don't help.

i am slightly more than a casual soccer fan, i watch the EPL most weekends.

I was watching the portugal game in a bar and when Cristiano missed an open shot, someone screamed "you suck renaldo". a snob at the table next to me said to his buddies "that guy obviously doesn't know anything about soccer, i hate american fans (he himself was wearing an american jersey)".

if someone yells "you suck lebron", no one get's all offended. why do soccer fans have to protect the game from casual sports fans?

I think his point here was that a good American commentator - hard though it may be to find one - would be less likely to foster the European emulation.

Phil Schoen (sp) is good. He's mostly just there to support Ray Hudson, though. And I think he's actually Canadian, but has no accent.

Is John Paul Delacambra still doing games? He and Roger Twibel used to do games.

1. Agree completely. It's silly and irritates most people. Although I don't mind the words pitch or boots.
2. Disagree. I like the announcers on ESPN/ABC. No reason to have NFL style announcing.
3. Completely agree. Stop pushing it on people. No need to tear down other sports.
4. No opinion
5. I disagree. I don't mind names like FC Dallas.
6. Impossible.
7. Agree. Fifa soccer is the best video game for sports ever. It has done a lot for the growth of the sport.
