Heat is a major issue. Why are they playing at 1 and 5 local time? Why not something like 4 and 8? It would also help out US viewers who are the only ones that matter. Whether it be the World Cup, Olympics, etc.

My guess would be they're keeping the European audience in mind

These times allow for them to watch live.

US viewers definitely aren't the only ones who matter when a billion people watch

I believe I woke up around 3-4 a.m. to watch the US get "handed" out of the Cup in 2002.

Anybody that questions the conditioning of these players ... go outside in South LA at 1 pm and try to run 3 miles.

Brutal.

Euro audiences get the prime time slots at this stage and beyond, which is fair considering the viewership numbers across the pond.

The last match of the day in the first 2 rounds of group play started late for them tho.

Brazil is also a couple of hours ahead of US time.

Well Brazils time zone allows them to cater to a wider audience than South Korea.

Europeans would watch at 3 am if they had to and wouldn't think twice about it. Especially if it meant they didn't have to throw their thermophobic players out there in 100 degree heat indexes at 1 pm.

first game is 6 CET/5 BST

second game is 10 CET/ 9 BST

those 12/11 games were rough in the group stages. Stop bitching people I was up till 1am or later for the USA games then had work a few hours later.

I did the same. I actually stayed up and watched all of the games other than Germany which I recorded and watched the next morning. That being said, that was played in Korea and it's impossible to have them play at a time that accommodates FIFA's beloved Europe and the Americas as well. It's unfortunate but I understand why they're playing the games so early here. Gives Europe prime-time viewership, and South American countries can watch the games in the middle of the day.

We're the only ones that matter when soccer is our 3rd-5th most popular game, but by far the rest of the world's most popular?

These times are actually pretty good for us here in the U.S. In 4 more years when the games are in Russia, it'll be much worse I'm sure.

And why would they? The US isn't the center of the universe for soccer. They're going to cater to the audience that would get them more revenue. That isn't the US.
