Rookie Question: Why do we get in over Portugal?

We both beat Ghana 2-1. (3 pts each)
We both lost to Germany (0 pts)
We tied head to head (1 pt each)
So, both teams have 4 pts, with losses & wins against the same opponent and a draw head to head.
What's the tiebreaker? Did Germany demolish Portugal (don't recall the score)?
Sorry in advance for the newb question.

Came down to the 4th tiebreaker. Which is, as everyone knows, is which country is more badass. And I mean really we win that every time.

The first tiebreaker after points is goal difference, which is just taking the total number of goals you scored across all group matches and subtracting the total number of goals scored against you.
We scored 4 goals total and gave up 4, so we have a goal difference of 0.
Portugal also scored 4 goals, but gave up 7, so they have a goal difference of -3.
So we have the better goal difference and advance, thanks largely to Germany beating Portugal 4-0.

If points are tied (4 and 4) then go to total score (think of the pool play as ONE big game) minus goals allowed.
As has been said, the USA won 2-1, 2-2, lost 0-1, so that is 4 goals scored and 4 given up, so a total of ZERO.
Portugal lost 0-4, tied 2-2, won 2-1, so that is 4 goals scored, BUT they gave up 7, so a total of NEGATIVE 3.

Think of it this way, because this is a pretty good illustration of why group play decided in this fashion makes a lot of sense.
We both played each other and the same 2 opponents.
We both beat Ghana 2-1.
We tied each other.
They lost worse to Germany than we did.
Us going through over Portugal is the only thing that makes sense.
