Gov. Bobby Jindal has signed legislation that will likely result in more residents washing down their popcorn or Twizzlers at movie theaters in Louisiana with a bottle of beer or a liquor drink.

Jindal's office announced Friday (June 20) the governor had signed Senate Bill 654, sponsored by Sen. J.P. Morrell, D-New Orleans, legalizing the sale of alcohol under certain conditions at movie theaters.

The law allows commercial film theaters to obtain a liquor permit as long as the alcohol sales are separated physically from other concessions. People under 18 must also be banned from entering the area where alcohol is sold.

The state commissioner of alcohol and tobacco control currently has discretion to issue alcohol permits to movie theaters. The law sets up a process by which any theater could apply for a permit and receive it upon meeting those requirements rather than be subject to the whim of the commissioner.

Theaters would also be required to get approval from their local government to sell alcohol.

This is an update from the alcohol at the movies thread a few days ago. Good to see this get through and Jindal does something that's actually small gov't conservatism.

However, I don't like the idea of the bold, what do you think?

I'm terrified to think of how much a mixed drink at the movie theater would cost.

The same as it does at a nicer bar

$6-8 for a beer
$6 on up for a glass of wine
$8 on up for mixed drinks

Yes, that's what people need in a theater; a place where you're supposed to be quiet and calm, alcohol. Brilliant thinking on this one.

While this is cool, I'll probably never do it. Drinks will be retarded expensive and I don't want to have to worry about having to piss the whole time.

Here come the moronic posts from people that have obviously never been to a theater like this.

I've been to several(where I live there are several theaters like this to choose from). Never seen people get wasted at the theater. Nor have I experienced it being louder.

In fact...it was quieter because these theaters don't allow patrons under 18 in the ones that serve alcohol. So no crying babies, no annoying teenager playing with her phone, no obnoxious people being loud in general.

See my post. They are no more expensive than a nice bar or at a nicer restaurant.

And it's not like you are pounding drink after drink or doing shots. Most I've ever had at these theaters...was 2 drinks.

Go to canal place in New Orleans and you will have your mind blown by how such an awesome theater it is and gasp, they sell alcohol.

Crazy I know.

You're right, instead of going to Fred's on Friday nights, I'm going to start going to the movie theater to get hammered now.

If I'm paying $11 to see a movie, I want to be sober as hell.

Even still, I don't even get any snacks at movies. If I'm already spending $10 on a movie ticket I'm not really looking to spend another $10-15 on concessions.

Then again, I guess that's why I don't go to the movie theater much.

This is Ipic

It's great..the way they have the seats the servers don't get in your way either. Those seats are the VIP seats($25 each). You can get basic seats...but no server service, no pillow, no blanket, and it doesn't recline and they are closer together like a normal theater. The VIP seats are all in the back and usually always sell out each movie.

Wow! How backwards are you guys? They've been selling beer at Japanese movies theaters since the silent movies era.

When we go to Ipic it's for a nice date night really. We easily will spend $100-$150 there for tickets, food, drinks and dessert when we go. We usually go and have dinner there though. So $150 for the whole night isn't bad for a date night imo.

The other ones that aren't as nice(but cheaper) are like $13 for tickets.

Yup. Food is actually really good as well. Most of it foods you can easily eat in the dark(sliders, flatbread pizzas, etc). Their truffle fries are freaking amazing and comes with this bacon ketchup that is awesome.
