The next Star Trek film (either the third or thirteenth, depending on your point of view) has set a course for the final frontier. Director Roberto Orci, in speaking to Geoff Boucher on the Humans From Earth podcast (via Badass Digest) revealed today that, unlike J.J. Abrams' Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, the new film will take place in deep space.

"[I]n this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters that you have ever seen," says Orci. "They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."

Orci is joined on the project by screenwriters Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, who are helping him pen the next adventure of the Enterprise crew.

The expectation is that the new film will land in theaters in 2016, just in time for the franchise's 50th anniversary. At the moment, however, no release date has been set.

So they finally decided to make a movie with them out in deep space doing what they are suppose to be doing, exploring the galaxy? It's about time.

(After the remake was announced) "How dare they remake Star Trek! frick Hollywood, they're so unoriginal."

(After the first two movies turned out to be different than the TV show) "frick Abrams. He's butchering Star Trek."

(After the third movie is revealed to be more like the original show):

Either that, or they'll shoehorn the plot of "The Final Frontier" in this movie, like they did Khan for Into Darkness. "What does God need with a starship?"

It started out this way, but later turned into finding a peaceful direction and solution via the "Prime Directive".

But, then there's the Borg...best "aliens" and/or enemy ever created in the Star Trek universe

I cannot wait. Perhaps we will get a couple of hours of Jim Kirk...klingon hunter.

I didn't like ST09, but thought STID was a big improvement. Too bad there were such big gaps between the movies. We could have almost had an extra film by the time 2016 arrives.

To bad the Borg was TNG and the delta quadrant was DS9, voyager, and TNG timelines and not in Kirk, spocks, or bones timeline unless they use time travel.

To be fair, in this new timeline they can get from Klingon space back to the solar system inside of three minutes so maybe Delta Quadrant isn't as far out of reach as it used to be.

True but I'm wandering if they will still use the wormhole to get there, will the cardassians already have a star base guarding the wormhole, and it wasn't the Borg at first but the dominion that we encountered in the delta quadrant unless you count voyager running into the Borg which by all accounts was a fluke and wasn't supposed to happen.

I blame everything that happens in the future on janeway and voyager

The Borg...

Weren't they alerted to humans and Alpha quadrant when Q was jumping the Enterprise around in TNG? Or did they get a signal off before Worf destroyed the transmitter in First Contact?
