Will Asik Finish Games?

He's a defensive force, but he's not very good on offense and is a low 60% FT shooter. With rumors and common sense pointing to Ryno being traded, do we need to target another stretch 4 if we trade Anderson? Channing Frye just opted out. He's not as good or young as Ryno, but for the purposes of balancing Asik with a stretch 4, he's a better substitute than Babbit.

I don't see any way around it. We need cap space to absorb Asik. There are 3 ways to get that done:

1) Completely gut the bench by cutting everyone and trading Rivers, Basically go down to the Finishing 5 Plus Asik and fill out the other 6-9 roster spots with league minimum guys.

2) Trade Gordon without taking money back, which seems very unlikely after giving up our 2015 1st to get Asik.

3) Trade Ryno, Tyreke or Jrue. Ryno is probably both the easiest to trade and easiest to replace by committee.

Ely, Withey (or Babbitt), and Rivers should be enough to make the salaries work out, huh?

I think the Ryno move is for a SF. Asik will probably finish games.

No it isn't. We need $8.3 million in cap space. Finishing 5 + Rivers, Withey and Ajinca is about $6.7. Trade Withey and Ajinca, about $1.8 million total, and you still don't have enough because one of them gets replaced with a $500 cap hold. You pretty much have to trade Austin Rivers and get nothing in return meaning either a future pick or a 1st you use on a euro stash like Saric. Any way you slice it, keeping the core intact leaves you with good starters but not much of a bench, so just like last year it would only take 1 or 2 injuries to get Monty and Demps fired.

The rumored deal though, Ryno to Phoenix for Gerald Green and a 1st nets you a decent starting small forward, and if you use the pick to dump Gordon, you'd have enough cap space to replace Ryno with Channing Frye and probably keep Morrow or add some more shooting.

If they get a pick, Adrien Payne makes sense. Not sure who they deal with (PHX is mentioned in the other thread) though.

Eric Pincus tweeted that he expects a Rivers deal to appear soon.

That was just him running the numbers (he maintains the team salary pages for basketballinsiders) and seeing what I just posted here, that you have to cut everyone and trade Rivers to make it happen. I can't see Demps going all in on 6 good players and 9 Dleaguers after the injury plagued season they just went through.

Oh I agree. Moving a big money guy (Gordon ideally, Evans/Anderson) makes the most sense. Guessing what they will do is a fool's errand

Edit: Really like basketball insiders. Nate Duncan is a great twitter follow

60% is plenty good enough to finish games. And Asik is a fee throw shooter who gets in a rhythm if teams try to keep fouling him.

Someone on PR mentioned a 3 way trade which I should have thought of, it's a much better solution.

We need to send out $5.3 million in salary to take Asik back. We can send Rivers, Ely, Miller, and Babbit to the Celtics for the #17 pick and keep our MLE and rights to Jason Smith.

Holiday/Roberts
Tyreke/Gordon
MLE/#17
Davis/Anderson
Asik/Smith/Withey/Ajinca

Everyone is voidable except Rivers and Ainge is one of the few GMs that's regularly been associated with interest in Rivers. I'd do it without getting a 1st just to clear cap space.

This.

And Frye opted out of a ~$6m deal, so he's expecting to get more than that?

Hot damn brother if this happens I will be pumped! Clear cap, get a pick, keep Ryno, & keep MLE

He's 30 now, so maybe he's hoping to get 4 year full MLE level deal now rather than be on the 2 year plan the next year?

It would be great. The only downside is that there aren't many realistic options at SF that would sign for the MLE. Most of the SFs are valued at a lot more than the MLE, or not worth it IMO.

I think we could get guys that fit at SF for us and I think that means a player that can shoot and defend...PJ Tucker (I'm on the Tucker pain train right now) or Richard Jefferson fit that mold for us imo

Tucker is probably the best fit. There are other players like Marion, Granger, and Jefferson but I'm not sure how much they have left in the tank.

Another option could be Marvin Williams, but I'm not overly excited about that either
