Surprised this hasn't been discussed yet. Does this not look like an interesting series for you movie/TV show gurus?
Tyrant premieres tonight on FX:
Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the inner workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation. Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the youngest son of a war-torn country's controversial dictator, returns to his homeland after a self-imposed 20-year exile in America for his nephew's wedding. Upon his return, Barry is immediately thrown back into the familial and national politics of his youth. He braces himself to confront the stark realities of his father and older brother Jamal's (Ashraf Barhom) harsh rule, and finds himself at odds with Jamal's wife, Leila (Moran Atias), who strongly believes in a firm, unforgiving regime. Although his wife, Molly (Jennifer Finnigan), struggles to comprehend her husband's apprehension, Barry is unable and unwilling to make his all-American family understand his unease over returning home. Emma (Anne Winters), their 17-year-old daughter, adores her father and shares his disdain for the extravagances of her extended family. Meanwhile, their son, 16-year-old Sammy (Noah Silver), revels in the lavish lifestyle their "royal" status brings, but dangerously tests cultural divides with his poorly disguised interest in handsome family bodyguard Abdul (Mehdi Dehbi). Barry's only warm memory of his childhood, boyhood friend Fauzi (Fares Fares), wants nothing to do with him. Fauzi is now a journalist, whose reports on the abuses of the Al-Fayeed rule resulted in his arrest and torture. Barry must now confront the life he once fled. With his father's health in decline, everyone – Jamal, their mother Amira (Alice Krige), their father's top advisor Yussef (Salim Daw), and even easygoing U.S. diplomat John Tucker (Justin Kirk) – expects him to assume a more active role in both the family and the regime.

The pilot has been receiving very mediocre reviews. I might check it out, but I'm not expecting much.

If they didn't throw in the gay son, I would be 100% on board. However, that makes me slightly less interested in watching it. Probably still will if the reruns will be on hulu

Sounds interesting enough to check out the pilot, but I'm not sure I'll stick with it based on what I just read in your OP.

Does FX really have that much programming in the middle of summer that they need to put it at 10 pm? Seems like poor promotion for the show.

depending on how violent or graphic the show is, it may have been forced to that time slot.

They run AHS at 8
Guess the rules are different during the summer

His gayness will probably create even more issues for the family in this area.
Interesting wrinkle and source of conflict.

All of their big shows are at 10PM EST. AMC does the same. Mad Men, Fargo, Louie, The Americans have all been on at 10PM this year.

I hope so. If the kid is subtly gay and very conflicted about it, it could work. If he has fabulous hand gestures and speaks like he just came from Broadway, I can immediately write this how off. Basically, if he's not Roger the Alien, or the director from "The Producers", this could be a great show.

glad you said something. I completely forgot with the world cup in full gear

Really looking forward to Tyrant. It was developed by Howard Gordon, the Homeland and 24 Live Another Day showrunner. Tyrant seems to be a very bold concept and should be a winner.

Pretty sure all of their original programming starts at 10 Eastern. Typically movies before.

Yea same here. Almost felt like catering to another demographic just to gain viewers. Never been a fan of that......or token people just to increase ratings.

I'll give anything on fx a shot

Doesn't look all that good. This is one of those shows where I'll wait and see if people start talking it up....and if they do I'll give it a watch. If not, I won't bother with it.

Got this series set to record on my DVR. With Sons of Anarchy ending, I'm hoping for another good FX series to take it's place just like when The Shield ended/SOA began.

The Strain is supposed to be their next big show.
