No fair looking stuff up on the Internet. This is the honor system. Feel free to say "I don't know anything about Portugal."

The US is playing Portugal tomorrow at soccer. I don't like soccer and will not watch. However, I was trying to remember what I learned about Portugal over my many decades of geo political study.

What I know:

Henry the Navigator
The Iberian Peninsula

What I think:

That's where Chianti wine is made.

What I don't know:

What side were they on in WWII?
Do they have a king, like Juan Carlos?

So, what do you know about Portugal?

All I know is my dumbass submarine captain kept going on and on about these awesome stallions we saw there.

Then, he tried to nuke Russia when our communications got cut off.

I thought Columbus was Italian and got financed by Spain. He might have set sail from Portugal.

Used to be badass explorers/imperialists back in the 1500-1700s.

Drugs are legal and they treat addicts.

Think they were neutral in WW2, but I could be wrong.

Something about Gibraltar and it's a famous rock

Hey. Van der Sloot was Dutch. Is he still in prison for killing that little blond girl on the island? Or maybe he killed another brunette girl later on to make things even.

Rock of Gibraltar is British, although Spain claims it as well

I remember Gibraltar being a territorial dispute but I don't remember which two countries were involved. Or, maybe it was the island of Malta. I get them confused.

They speak Portuguese there. The capital city sounds like a gay woman. That's all I know.

You left out one of their most significant contributions to Western civilization: the rise in power of the Knights Templar, whose headquarters were in Portugal, and their importance in money and banking.

Well, here is an important footnote. We all know that Spain and Portugal = The Iberian Peninsula. But we do not all know that Iberian is also the name of an airline in Spain and the name of one of the world's most important Newspapers..

They created slavery as a white-black institution. Henry the Navigator.

WTF, Henry the Navigator was one of my favorite people. I read the Encyclopedia when I was 12 and loved Henry. There was nothing about him creating slavery. shite.
My other favorite person was Xerxes. He created the Phalanx. Or maybe he copied it from someone else. Patent laws weren't in effect back in those days.

Their record in regard to protecting Jewish people during WWII was pretty good and there are very, very few European nations which can say that.

Also, when the United States was trying to airlift weaponry to Israel during the Yom Kippur War, Portugal was the only country that would provide basing assistance for re-fueling for the U.S. to use during that operation.
