American astrophysicists who announced just months ago what they deemed a breakthrough in confirming how the universe was born now admit they may have got it wrong.

The apparent first direct evidence of such so-called cosmic inflation -- a theory that the universe expanded by 100 trillion trillion times in barely the blink of an eye -- was announced in March by experts at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

For weeks, some scientists have expressed doubts about the findings of the BICEP2 team.

In a summary, the team said their models "are not sufficiently constrained by external public data to exclude the possibility of dust emission bright enough to explain the entire excess signal," as stated by other scientists who questioned their conclusion.

oooppppps.

Now what will Sheldon do?

I loved the announcement when it happened. But, this is why we have to take scientific discoveries with a grain of salt. How many times do they come back and say that they missed it or that they were flat out wrong? A lot.

Why? What about the Big Bang Theory is inconsistent with the existence of G-d?

Every action implies an initiator. A constant, unchanging universe would be more consistent with atheistic philosophy than a vibrant, living one, in my opinion.

Once they get all the math sorted out, they'll figure out it didn't take the blink of an eye, it took about seven days.

I really thought this was about string theory.

I am religious. I get things wrong a lot.

Actually, my religion says that we are all limited, we all sin and fall short of God's glory, and we all see as through a glass darkly. That is what the Bible says, so we should have no problem admitting when we get things wrong.

You were saying?

This is not a bad thing. This is how the science of physics makes progress. I'm glad they're still thinking; still asking questions.

At least we don't have to worry about the models used to determine the existence and degree of global warming being sufficiently constrained by external public data, that issue is settled science!

That's what's great about science. What we believe today will be scoffed at this time in 3014.

Science gets it wrong now and then.
It happens. But the trick is continuing to pursue the right answer, rather than declaring the science is "settled"

Far from an indictment of science IMO, the OP lays out science as it should be.
