I hope you support this. We have an influx of kids in the parish and although some parka are in great shape, others are not.

I also strongly support using Lamar Dixon as a sportsplex capable of hosting a multitude of events.

Should raise property taxes by 9-15 dollars monthly.

The only issue with this tax is that it is being pitched as a way to repair and upgrade local parks, which is a noble cause that is very near and dear to most Ascension citizens, but the vast majority of the money will be spent at Lamar Dixon. If this ballot initiative fails, it will be for that reason.

However, I will probably vote for it.

M is the Roman Numeral for 1000 so it's 1000 1000's

As long as only folks who own property are allowed to vote on property taxes then I have no problem with this vote. To bad this is not the case, haves will be paying for the have nots.

It's Ascension Parish. The majority of voters are property owners.

The problem is Lamar getting most of the money being the huge money dump it's been since the purchase. If they create a sports complex out of it and make it more usable, I'd be ok with that. As it is though, the property is being underutilized.

I know the main guy pushing for the sportaplez and he's a 40 yr coach been in ascension since Katrina and organizes events all over the country.

I think he could do it right.

My biggest issue with it is the infrastructure getting in and out. They need to either build a back road or improve the only road that leads to and from the area. I think adding some playing fields and such is a good investment. What ever happened to the indoor swimming pool at the YMCA out there?

Because property owners don't pass property taxes on to their renters? This argument gets old. If property taxes go up, I doubt my landlord is going to eat it because he's a nice guy.

The argument is not old, raise the parish sales tax which would affect all equally. Property taxes go after targeted groups, fact, period.

And just to humor your assertion. Commercial leases typically have 5 years contracts, larger entities might have 10-15. The property owner (landlord) cannot pass on the raise to the tenant.

When this country was founded, only property owners could vote because the only taxes were property taxes and import/export tariffs.

I've heard the two councilmen that voted against it are more worried about road infrastructure and sewage and feel that's a more important priority than a few parks at Lamar Dixon. Does anyone know anything about that?

One of them has a district that's majority old people. He knew his district wouldn't want it because they wouldn't use it.

Ascension has a pretty long backlog of road and drainage projects, so that is a legitimate argument.

This stand to benefit the rich and poor. Everyone has kids, and if we can attract a few random tournaments that will bring millions into the local economy, the rich profit.

It's called a tax-escalation clause.
