IIRC, they tried to develop a growth plan several years ago but the locals came out with their pitchforks, claiming they were trying to turn ascension into a socialist European-like state.
Maybe so, I don't really remember it. Probably wanted to pass a tax to fund a survey on it.
Seriously, there is a ton of waste in this parish and until they get real about managing their budget they will just raise property taxes until we are at the level of Mandeville with none of the perks.

Ascension has some of the lowest property taxes in the nation.
Louisiana as a whole fits this.

Where is the waste?
Militarized police force, park system trying to compete with BREC, drainage department that either has its hands tied or is ineffective, public school system that fights each other rather than doing its job, tax breaks out the arse for everyone but the residents.

It seems like we are misplacing our priorities here in the AP. We need to focus on drainage and sewage works, improving, maintaining and designing road infrastructure developing new programs for our schools like a magnet program, and getting a handle on the commercial and real estate developers running wild in this parish. If we're not careful, we could end up like BR.
I'm leaning towards voting against this tax.

Militarized police force,
What does this mean? You think there need to be less cops on the streets?

park system trying to compete with BREC
What's the issue here? Are you trying to say Ascension should tell their residents to go to EBR for parks and recreation?
At least give the people some trails and couple dog parks.

Is this reflected in school performance?

So raise taxes on who? Businesses?

And just to humor your assertion. Commercial leases typically have 5 years contracts, larger entities might have 10-15. The property owner (landlord) cannot pass on the raise to the tenant.
Most commercial leases in the suburbs are triple net. Meaning, the lessee is responsible for the net property tax.
Further, residential leases are generally for a yaer, meaning, the cost will be quickly passed on

What happens when you elect people who recently moved out of BR.

Ascension needs their own St George before it's too late and people start forcing them to get parks and recreation. I mean, what's next? Bike lanes?

Yes.

I'm saying we don't need to compete overnight with a system that took decades to build.

I could get behinf these ideas. Inexpensive and logical solutions. We don't have these.

I can't think it is helping to redraw district lines every couple of years and play favoritism with certain schools.

I'm against raising taxes on anyone. However, since that isn't their plan then yes. At least make them carry their weight.

Another cheap and logical move, it takes a few gallons of paint. Ascension has none and with all the roads being improved I think 42 is the only one with a hint of this happening.

I knew there was a resin for it, just didn't know the reason. Thanks.
I'm in banking and we use M for thousands and MM for millions. I'm so accustomed to it that I didn't even think twice when I read the thread title.

Chris Loar will solve it all though. Another silver spoon jackass that has no clue what made AP the place everyone wanted to move.

When he first ran I remember him asking me, "What is the biggest problem you see facing our parish?"
I told him that I felt infrastructure was terrible and that the council just chooses to ignore it. How hwy 42 was 10 years overdue for widening and that the project keeps getting robbed to pay for other projects.
His response...
"What about recreation for our kids?"
Only other significant interaction with him was a year after Gustav when our neighboorhood needed help dealing with a utility contractor who had seriously neglected a property. Zero help, didn't even make a phone call.

I've heard they are going to build a soccer complex out at Lamar if this property tax passes. That's one thing that could really help their soccer assoc. It would also allow Gonzales the ability to host tournaments which would bring in more revenue from out of towners.

Other than Urine, a lot of fail in this thread.
Please don't move to EBR. Our recently completed four lane roads (that many of you use to work in the city) don't need any other traffic.
And stay the frick out of our parks.

quote:And once again, if this tax passes, (God forbid), you will have a few nice parks, a money losing facility in Lamar-Dixon, and piss poor roads to get you to both. The supporters of this tax put on a good show last night at the council meeting but it wasn't necessary. There was no way the usual 8 councilpersons under TM's thumb were going to deny it.

Other than to drop tax dollars at your restaurants and stores, I do not.
