The Passport is a big, blocky phablet and BlackBerry's strangest phone ever

BlackBerry is preparing to release what may be its weirdest smartphone ever. This year it's already launched the Z3, and soon that will be joined by the BlackBerry Classic — an obvious throwback to the company's glory days. But there's another product making its way through the pipeline as well, and it's a lot more blocky. BlackBerry is calling its third phone planned for fiscal year 2015 the Passport. We've never seen anything quite like it, and we'll let you decide whether that's a good or bad thing.

First, just take a look at its square display, which measures 4.5 inches with a resolution of 1440x1440. Right below that is a QWERTY keyboard that's shorter and stretches wider than most other keyboards we've seen from the company. It's not entirely clear what BlackBerry is shooting for with the Passport; it's more or less a business class take on the phablet — a really, really square phablet. And it's so wide; even wider than Samsung's Galaxy Note 3. The BlackBerry Passport is due sometime this September, so for now all we can do is look and imagine trying to successfully hold it in one hand.

They are gonna sell man purses next. There is no way that will fit in a pocket.

I'm not sure if it is the fumes from the mosquito truck that just drove by making me say this, but that looks kinda cool.

Blackberry had their day and they are the ones who shite in their own bed and then burned down their own house while running around punching their own dicks.

The Playbook was a magnificent piece of hardware with a great operating system but they had no support for it and took a year to allow users to have PIM on it, by that point no one gave a shite about the Playbook.

Their phones that they were offering at that time were really bad. i had a Bold that would randomly start downloading until it killed the battery or I did a battery pull and rebooted the phone. The Tour was a good phone except the trackball that got stuck constantly. Their first touchscreen phones with the clicky shite were awful.

This passport is an interesting take on a market I have absolutely no interest in. Not sure what I would do with 6 or 7" phone.

The phones aren't the problem. It's the lack of apps. Plain and simple.

That and the software isn't very intuitive.

My Z10 worked well. Great at texting, smooth surfing, incredibly fast. Lack of apps and a shitty camera were the cons, and those are huge negatives.

They are actually proud of that device ? Looks like a step backward in time 10 years.

As a current BB user, one of the things I always preferred was the form factor. How do they think this will fit in someone's hand/pocket comfortably? Strangest phone design I've ever seen.

I don't see the appeal of the QWERTY keyboard with touchscreen technology being the norm.

BB should forget about devices and OS and focus on what they're really good at which is MDM and security. Plenty of money to be made in that space.

I find a physical QWERTY keyboard to be more accurate and quicker than the touch screen alternative. I make a ton of mistakes when typing on an iPhone. I can also type out a lot of commands without have to hunt for the app/contact. I've found that it helps me be more efficient with my messaging but I understand that's not the opinion of the majority.

I love the keyboard. And, my Z10's touchscreen was wayyyyyyy better than my GS5's. Much more intuitive, much easier to use. I hate the keyboard on my GS5. And the touchscreen isn't that great.

I read a lot of pdfs and word docs. Will be much easier on a screen such as that one.

I think the passport (Windermere) was designed with the medical field in mind.
