First off, mad respect to these guys for their level of fitness and skill.

But how can these guys take a 50 mph header with that hardass ball and then lay down on the ground when they get kicked in the thigh.

Maybe they're all faking but that seems ridiculous. You'd think they'd be out with the concussion before a Charlie Horse.

What's the deal?

If you head the ball right, it doesn't really hurt. Getting kicked when you're both running full speed hurts like a motherfricker. Even if it doesn't look bad, that shite is painful.

A lot of it is exaggeration though.

The ball isn't that hard, and it's the impact isn't THAT bad if your form is correct.

I want you to take off on a 40 yard dead sprint and I'll rack you across the leg with this as you pass. Not even with the force of my leg - just hold it in my hand and swing it at the inside of your knee while you pass.

You let us know how that pans out for you.

Still looks like that header would knock you the hell out but what do I know.

Thanks for the explanation

How about I rack you in the head with it as I run by- which wouldn't be that fast. Let me know how that's pans out for you.

This topic needs a sticky, no bologna.

Btw, I'm not ridiculing you. It's just a very, very popular question.

Sometimes a header hurts but most of the time it's really not bad. Nothing like getting kicked in the ankles.

How about you ask an inane question on a message board, and then act like a count when somebody gives you a serious answer?

There is a huge difference between trying to head the ball (which is what happens probably 80 percent of the time and having the ball whack you in the head unexpectedly.

When the latter occurs, like to Jermaine Jones in the Turkey game, the guys definitely lie down to regather themselves, assuming they aren't concussed.

One thing that always puzzled me is why the guys are wearing thinner and thinner shoes. The current Nikes look essentially like socks. I realize they want lightweight footwear, but it's not as if the older models are Chuck Taylors, and with the spikes hitting your foot, you'd think the players would want more protection.

The ball is nowhere near as hard as a football or basketball.

It's more akin to a volleyball. I can't describe it accurately - there's almost a squishy outer layer.

And when you head it correctly it doesn't hurt.

Metal cleats on your leg - 10,000 times more painful.

Defenders typically do wear something more protective.

Speed.

It's going to suck either way if somebody steps DOWN on your foot (I've had many polka-dot bruises on my feet ), so why sacrifice the speed?

I'd generally agree with this concept that lighter is better, until the newest generation of cleats that half of the players in the World Cup are wearing. My feet hurt just thinking about how much it must hurt to get stomped in them.

They're no thinner than what's been around for years.

I'd also think it's important to note that the match balls these guys play with are far different in material density, stiffness and surface than what you see at Academy.

You couldn't pay me to head an $11.99 Target ball, especially in the cold. I'd rather smash my head against a door casing.

The reason the ball doesn't hurt if you go to head it is because you use the muscles in your neck and use a tough part of your head to push the ball away. If the ball hits you in the face from a free kick or you just don't see it coming, it hurts like frick.

Somebody needs to make a YouTube video with this, and then people will stop freaking out every time a player falls down grimacing. That shite hurts. People who played (like me) understand that.

CL vs East Jeff "You just got knocked the F' out"

I've been to a million football games and a good bit of soccer games and this was one of the most brutal hits I've ever seen at either one.

Kid from East Jeff takes a ball right to the head point blank and get knocked out cold. It was freezing at the game and the thud it made was terrible.

So yeah running full speed and getting cleated hurts, but taking a shot like this or getting drilled in the wall would give me nightmares.
