The surprise early frontrunner in New Hampshire’s next GOP presidential primary is the loser of the last White House race – former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who wipes the 2016 field by a more than 2-1 margin, a new Suffolk University-Boston Herald poll reveals.

We might have a modern day Abe Lincoln on our hands.

He keeps denying it but I've been noticing something going on here for a while now. If Jeb or Christie don't run, I imagine he'll think again.

It would be interesting since Obama has been so bad and there may be independent voters who might feel they shouldn't make the same mistake twice. He has the "you almost voted for me last time, and look what not doing so has done" thing going.

I still think Rs could do better. But it's not about better anymore, it's all about marketability.

Jindal's first run ended with him losing to Blanco. After the fiasco that was her handling of Katrina, Jindal won decisively. Maybe Romney is hoping that's the situation here?

Wouldn't surprise me. Really, why would it surprise anyone?

Some insiders have suggested that that isn't the case, but he's certainly working to burnish a natinal profile. Maybe he has something else in mind, but I wouldn't have a heart attack if he did. The 2016 field probably doesn't impress him, so he may figure it's worth it to give it one last shot. Some of his foreign policy commentary on the trail certainly seems prescient in hindsight.

I thought Romney didn't really want to run last time? Can't these RINO's just go away?

I don't know about that. I mean, his wife still has a horse elevator. Why would we want people of that ilk in the White House?

The fact that they ran the poll first without Romney should tell you Suffolk was just playing around by adding him in to a second-chance round. What's really surprising is that Christie narrowly finished first over Paul in the real poll, the one that excluded Romney.

I could get behind a 2016 Romney run.

The slate of plausible GOP candidates that has emerged thus far is pretty flawed. I like Jeb and believe that he could mount a serious primary campaign (funding would be nearly unlimited) but his name is going to be a serious obstacle. I think Christie is fatally wounded, Walker may have some warts, and Paul will.not.make.it.through.the.primary.

If I were Romney, I'd be giving it a serious look. Hillary is a shell of the candidate she was in 2008, and she lost then.

ETA: She may not run. And if she does, she may not win the nomination.

Of course he would. But he wouldn't rampage his way through Washington with an ideological chainsaw, so a certain wing of the party will stay pissed.
