I clicked one of the links in the article
SS set up the retirment age in 1938 at 65 LINK when the average life expectancy was 62 males and 65 for females LINK. So what is wrong with ppl working until they are older than 65?
quote:was taling about and it gave an article about middle-class americans working until they die. LINK

As a result, 34% said they plan to work until they're at least 80 -- that's up from 25% in 2011 and 30% last year. An even larger percentage, 37%, said they'll never retire and plan to either work until they get too sick or die, the survey found.

Nothing wrong with it. I plan on teaching college students when I retire. I want to share my vast real-world experience with those stupid lil frickers! Lol
Edit: then I'll be off to Wal-Mart to greet people!

Nothing if that's what you want. Sounds like a shite deal if you'd rather be doing something else.

My grandpa retired from a factory in 1995. Got bored, a week later went to work at Kroger. Still there.

my grandfatehr was a judge until the state wouldn't let him run again (I think he was 75 and 3rd heart attack). He then became a professional pain in the arse until the day he died at 94. He would spend the mornings at my uncle's law office bossing ppl around and the afternoons at my dad's farm bossing ppl around.

I intend to work as long as I can.

Sounds like me.
Of course, part of the problem is I have to pay taxes out the wazoo, overpay for insurance so people like Sandra Fluke can have free birth control pills, overpay for electricity and gas because of inane government regulations, overpay for food because the government insists on putting it in gas tanks, etc.
I would feel a lot better about being able to retire if I could keep what I earned and pay a fair and reasonable price for essentials.

But if you are in some shite job just trying to make ends meet, it's probably depressing.
Age isn't really a factor in this statement.

My grandpa is 86 and he still goes to work. He does a few things around the law firm every day.
My great uncle worked until he was in his 90s. He lived down the street from his office and he would walk there each morning.

If you love your profession you never have to work a day in your life.
Choose wisely.

Depends on your profession and what breaks down before you die.
If you're a scientist - you can work all your life as long as you don't lose your wits.
If you're a coal miner - planning to work all your life prolly not a good idea, unless you're planning on a short one.

I don't plan on busting it like I do now until the day I die, but I can't imagine doing nothing after a certain age.

Not necessarily. The younger you are, the more hope you have that there's going to be something better in the future.
The worst thing would be to have a high-paying job that you hate. Then you're tied to it because you have to pay the bills.
