My guess would be the original purpose of the lighthouse was to warn ships of the giant rock it was sitting on. But after 100 or so years, the waves have eroded most of that rock away.

Probably much easier to build it when it was sitting on a rock that may have been massive.

Erosion, even by wave action that substantial, would take longer than 100 years to accomplish the assumed elevations needed.

They likely worked according to tidal changes as well as developing some sort of coffer damn system.
