I actually didn't realize that you could buy a gun from a state where you don't reside...

This^. Call the local gun shop and ask if they will receive your transfer. Then they will charge you a transfer fee for the NICS and 4473 when you arrive to pick it up.

$25 is good.
I worked at Bowies, they charged $50. Assholes.
I think a lot of places charge $25. The only one I've ever done was at LA reloading and supply, he was $25. It was a while back though.
