Over the last month I've had extensive conversations with my closest 3 vet friends about the VA situation. All retired. Brother, golf partner, gym partner.

Here is the short summation of their opinions:

1. The V.A. should be dismantled.

2. If you are seriously wounded in combat you should get a govt card that gives you access to free care in any hospital.

3. If you are never hurt in combat and just get old without securing your own insurance it's your problem.

Thoughts?

Better learn to love the VA.

That's ultimately what Obamacare (in whatever form it ultimately takes) will buy all of us

We should have abolished the VA a long time ago.

Abolish the VA, and instead give veterans extensive vouchers to use for private care. Of course, Paul Ryan tried doing that to medicare, and the democrats had a meltdown.

This would present a few problems. The mental and emotional strain suffered by many vets maybe overlooked by this criteria. Well heck. With all the PTSD suicides, I guess it wasn't being treated anyway.

Maybe just abolish the Republican Party and we won't get involved in that many wars...fewer vets...fewer VA scandals?

Just a thought

How long has the VA been in existence? Are you saying Clinton should have gotten rid of it immediately? GH Bush certainly wasn't going to undo his father's works

Prior to 9-11 every major war in the 20th century that we were in, we had a democrat in office. STFU

So again it beckons the question: was Reagan's concept flawed? Is Obama wrong for implementing Reagan/Romney-type care for all?

Yes because the democrats have NEVER sent troops into war zones and Obama has ended every war we were invloved in when he took office and not a single American soldier or contractor has been wounded on foriegn soil under Obama's leadership.

Did Reagan force the ACA on America despite it being wildly unpopular?

Did Romney say he was going to force Massachusett's health care law on the entire country?

Nice attempt to deflect though.

So are you saying the VA was operating fine until we started getting vets from Republican president-inspired wars?
Are you mad?

I completely agree. It's called the "service" for a reason. Thank you for your service. Now become a productive citizen and move on with your life.

The VA had been flawed since its inception. And, it has progresively gooten worse and worse over the years, regardless of which political party held the oval office at a given time.

Only a simpleton like youself would turn this into a republican caused issue.

To be fair, only a simpleton (again, someone like yourself) would blame Obama for the current VA scandal. He should only get criticism (in this instance) is for his continued lack of leadership when thing like this come up.

I wasn't deflecting. Another poster drew a comparison between the VA and Obamacare, citing similar woes. I was drawing a pretty simple conclusion: Obama seems to think like Reagan, but just a little more grandiose in plan.

Must have something to do with his ego

Jach may have a point. My father was retired Air Force-WW2,Korea, and early Viet Nam--bomber pilot. My dad and mother got good care in Shreveport and Texas, my mother especially, but it changed for the worse. A family member is in hospital adm.. and their mgt. group has researched and discussed the VA hospital Administration as to how their hospital can not be like the VA, etc.. They found out that employee unions/associations are the cause of them being so slow. They do not work an 8 hour day at all. They stop taking appointments at 3:00 so they can leave at 4:00. They use every union trick in the book and civil service rules to work only 5 hours a day out of 8. They take 2 breaks a day, 5 minutes to walk to the time clock,5 to walk back to their work station,15 min. to walk to punch out for lunch and 15 after lunch to walk back, that's 1 1/2 hours for lunch, leave 15 min. early to walk to the time clock to punch out at 4:00. No patients seen between 4 and 5 and almost none between 3 and 5. Union/civil service rules. No staying over, no staying late, no starting early, if there are surjuries. They don't care. The Democrats and Obama will never hurt the unions, employees to help the VA. A complete firing and new leadership without unions is the only answer and Obama or Hillary will never do it. I would give all 29 hospitals mgt. to private companies immediately to benefit the Veterans. The CEO of my wife's hospital is a retired military man and he said he would take one, but , would have to kick but, fire many, and clean house.

So: the guy hurt in a training accident. The guy who never spent a day overseas, but has 50% hearing loss from being around jet engines. The guy who spent 25 years in the service, taking less pay than he could have gotten in the private sector and now has fewer financial resources to secure his own medical plan than he would have otherwise.. They're all SOL. Gotcha.

Maybe not. He could have been comparing Obama's thinking with Reagan's current level of brain activity

Maybe the VA should replace the current workforce with military veterans or even have current enlisted personnel run the place, sans the union.

When people have a dog in the hunt I think they do a better job at what they're doing.
