A movie producer with experience in Hollywood and the booming "Hollywood South" scene in Louisiana hopes to build a $63.5 million movie production campus in Algiers near the Crescent City Connection.

Scott Niemeyer of Gold Circle Films said Deep South Studios would be located on nearly 19 acres of land and offer five sound stages, two production buildings and other space for a total 262,000-square-foot facility. It would be the largest in the region with the nearest similarly sized studios in Atlanta and Albuquerque.

quote:

Niemeyer left Algiers in the 1980s for the West Coast after school. But he recently returned home, buying a condo in the Warehouse District, after the state's film production tax incentive program set off a boom in Louisiana-based production activity, dubbed "Hollywood South." Among other work, he produced the campus musical "Pitch Perfect" and its in-progress sequel, both in Baton Rouge.

He is an officer in the Louisiana Film & Entertainment Association and has been a vocal supporter of state film tax incentives.

Niemeyer said he intends on raising $49.5 million in foreign investment for the project through a federal program granting visas to immigrants who invest in new commercial enterprises in the U.S., known as the "EB-5" program.

My thoughts exactly.

My only critique is that you simply need to place the cheese; an alarm and accompanying strobe light might be too conspicuous.

The state doesn't subsidize infrastructure, so I have no problem with this project.

The only kinda screwy thing is that the government is granting citizenship to foreigners who send money to this guy. Don't have a problem with foreigners and its not our money so good luck to them. Hope it works out.

The EB5 program has been around for 20 years or so, although it's really ramped up in the past 3 years. It's essentially become rich Chinese buying green cards - particularly now that Canada outlawed their version of it earlier this year.

California taxes driving business away.

A trivia that a lot if people don't know.

Jacksonville Florida was the original movie production capital if America, but they didn't like people working on Sundays and thought the actors and actresses might be a bad influence on the town.

The movie industry eventualy packed up and moved to California.

I am a trivia buff.

Its hard to believe in 2014 that Jacksonville was such a moral high ground.

Look where it got them...

Uhhh... all of the plants being built in S. Louisiana currently with state tax incentives say hello.

Yes, the film tax credits don't go for this... but you can bet the state will support this in some way.

I assume the reason and rationale is, this is the type of thing the direct tax credits are designed to spur, and that is what is going on here.

Or is it automatically necessary to contemplate something much more nefarious and underhanded?

For the record... I am fine with the tax credit programs. I think they help the state and the citizens much more than they cost the state in forgone tax revenue from the companies.

Specifically, this looks to be a great project and as a taxpayer I have no problems with the state supporting it.

Yes unfortunately there is an infrastructure subsidy too.

I think it may actually be 40% but I will have to check.

So 40% would mean $25.4 million out of our pockets.
