I learned that a by-product at a PDH plant (propane dehydrogenation - uses propane to produce polymer-grade and chemical-grade propylene) I'm working at in South Texas, near Galveston, is hydrogen cyanide. Apparently, cyanide can be used to extract gold (and silver) from low-grade ore through a process called "gold cyanidation" and can also be used in the food industry as an anti-caking agent via ferrocyanide (ferrocyanide is nontoxic due to the cyanide being tightly bonded to the iron, ferro-).
The plant doesn't sell the hydrogen cyanide. I don't know what the process is called, but I'm going to say they refine the cyanide into sodium ferrocyanide, which is primarily used for anti-caking in road and table salt.
