Do you consider some athletes and rappers "businessmen"?

Some no, some sort of.

Lebron and the like? No. They may be good at aiding the brand, but they're not selling much.

Pdiddy or Jay Z? Yes, to some degree. They transcended their original fame and used it to develop brands and products.

Now they're not doing it alone, all of them are fronts for teams of pure businessmen who sell and market and make business decisions, but they've developed or had business aptitude that other musicians/athletes don't have.

I'm not a businessman. I'm a business, man.

HOV

ETA: and they are absolutely businessmen, that's just not the first thing I think when I see them. Lebron has a worldwide brand that he controls, and that has everything to do with business and marketing...on top of his (I assume) many business ventures.

Of course they're businessmen.

Magic is most certainly a great businessman. He had celebrity but was very savvy in leveraging that into a profitable business. Jay-Z is a marketing genius.

If they do what Diddy and Swiss Beatz did and get the proper accreditation sure. Rappers are musicians in my perspective just not the ones you hear kids blaring.

Pdiddy

from my understanding, p diddy is the one true original businessman on the list. he got started as an intern at a record label then got into production and management. he started rapping as a side thing when biggie got popular. everyone else was a athlete or musician first.

But they don't know anything. They get in contact with actual businessmen who use their name to sell stuff.

IMO, guys that own actual businesses and make their own decisions are businessmen.

Guys that just get paid for endorsing/branding and/or give money to professionals who then invest are not.

This is true for a lot of "great" business people. Oprah is a billionaire, but she's not a marketing savant. She was always aided by folks who sell/market/strategize for a living. She had a brand that could sell, and people sold it. When she became popular enough to leverage it against those who were making money off of her so that she could make most of the money, she did so.

I guess that depends on whether they are engaged in their own business or own a business.

All of these dudes are businessmen, some of them are just better at it than others and have different strengths than others. For example, Jay-Z - awesome at marketing. He'd be great at doing a prospect to customer analysis, but I wouldn't want him building the financial model.

Shaq is the same way.

Now on the other hand Mike Richter (one of the NY Rangers greats) manages a $100M private equity fund. I would not want Richter doing anything when it comes to Marketing

Because they are the most public figures I could think of who crossed over.

I'm sure it's both.

What point are you trying to make...that Jay-Z isn't a good marketer?
