Would it be better to buy a P or build?

Not for gaming. Just using it for normal interwebz searching, kids to play abc games to learn, and for me to do school work.
Willing to spend $800-$1000. Want something that will last, that is quick, etc. Wasn't sure if the build route was better to go or not being it's not a gaming P
And I need it right away. So if building will take long, I guess I have my answer

$800 seems like a lot for what you need.

It may be. I'm not sure what it'll cost. But that's my range. Doesn't have to be that, it can be less

Honestly, if it's just a very simple family PC for bs stuff like web surfing and MS Office, You shouldn't need anywhere near $800.
I find 9 times out of 10 that it's cheaper to build your own PC, but if you feel you aren't capable of building one yourself (or don't know someone who can help you do it), then it may just easier to buy a cheapo PC for now and save the time. Especially since it's not for gaming or any other major process.
Do you plan on building a gaming PC anytime in the near future?

For a $1000 you might as well build one that games too.

Then maybe I can buy the wife a cheapo desktop and get myself a laptop

If you are a costco member, go there and pick up a PC in the $500 range. It will do exactly what you need and costco's return policy is great if you get it home and you don't like it.

If you want a PC that lasts you need to move to the future. PC components are outdated within a year

If I planned on gaming, I definitely would, but it's been 4 months since I turned my PS4 on and I'm back in school, so my free time will be studying

I just didn't know how much to expect. The wife wants the big monitor and all that bullshite. I just want to make sure it doesn't take 3 days to open a program and won't crash every 20 minutes

I hear ya. Only reason I asked, was that if you did plan on building one within the next year, it may be worthwhile to buy some nicer peripherals and barebones parts up front (Monitor, case, etc...) and just save money on the graphics card, ram, and CPU until you were ready for a gaming PC.
Technology is outdated so quickly these days with PC components. Although if you're just web browsing and using MS Office, PC's can last a long arse time for that without having to upgrade parts.

This is what I'm interested in. It's mainly for the wife and kids. I plan on getting a laptop. My bro built a PC, so I know about what goes into it and how tech changes constantly

Always better to build
No bloatware or crap you don't need

Well say goodbye to legitimate help then.
Anyways, thread seems covered. Just spent all night in the ER with my daughter. No energy.
