Probably a positive and a negative charge.

They already have River Parish Community College. I know plenty of the smarter kids in Ascension go ahead and start getting college credits while still in hs.

I don't think they'll ever do it. It would lower the precious school ratings when they move the advanced kids.

Their primary and middle schools have the TAG program. Most of the elementary schools are already really great so a magnet program isn't really necessary.

At the high school level, they have those academies like the Technology (Game design and robotics) at EA, Culinary at Dutchtown, and Allied Health at STA that students from any high school can attend. With a littany of AP classes and duel enrollment opportunities at RPCC and VOTECH schools, basically, they already have the specialized programs of a magnet school already in place in their public schools.

I was in a be magnet school and ascension tag at different times growing up. No comparison. Tag isnt even close to the same.

Why is it assumed the primary schools are good? High test scores? Maybe it has something to do with holding kids back to get those high scores?

They don't hold kids back for higher test scores, they hold kids back so they will be better at sports in middle/high school.

If you want a magnet school, live in BR or send your kids to one of the handful of private elementary schools.

Agree or disagree: if a kid tests at a mastery level on the first week of school, they should remain in that grade anyway because its ascension parish.

Dutchtown won't even consider it. Maybe I need the hookup.

A population that can read and write would be a good place to start

It takes some lobbying on the part of the parent. Even if the kid is ready intellectually, it might not be ready socially, mentally, or physically.

For example, they didn't let my brother skip immediately because his motor skills weren't developed well even though he could read in pre-k. After a few weeks, though, his motor skills caught up, so they let him move up a grade.

I had a similar issue because I was physically behind. I was half the size of even the smaller kids my age. The school wanted to hold me back for physical reasons, but they couldn't do so because I was so mentally far ahead that I should have been skipping. So, they did the right thing and kept me where I was.

They are probably scared a magnet school will hurt neighborhood schools' test scores. They don't give a shite about the kids anymore, just want a good school score.

Yes some of these parishes have gifted and talented programs, but usually it is just for ELA and/or Math. Unfortunately, these kids have to take the remainder of their classes with idiots.

My parish is not bad overall, but I think it should have a magnet where gifted kids could truly flourish. The dumb arse good ole boys will have none of that though.

Real college and post-college bound kids go to private schools in EBR.

Future fast-food workers go to public schools in EBR.

Future vo-tech school graduates go to public schools in Ascenscion, Livingston and Zachary.

A magnet school would mess this up.
