If you go to any dictionary, the word conservative is defined as "a political ideology committed to preserving social institutions" or "preserving the status quo" in a society. If this is indeed the correct definition, then us conservatives carry a multitude of black marks of shame, such as opposition to the civil rights act and supporting the institution of slavery. Is this something we just have to live with, or is the premise wrong to begin with?

The definition you cite has little in common with what it means to be a political conservative. The problem: just as in this case, liberals control the narrative through control of nearly every form of media.

Of course it's what it means.

Of course people like to make it mean whatever they personally believe at the moment.

True. The folks who think different are at most of the major networks, publications and any entertainment outlet, IMO, the have muddied the term "conservative". They usually speak the loudest so that's what a majority of the left believes we are.

But then if you go to the word liberal, it means "opposition to established order" and a "political ideology committed to changing society". This literally means that liberals are the good guys, and conservatives are the bad guys.

Are you all seriously suggesting that the dictionary is biased or am I misinterpreting this thread?

I think it means that the labels we use to describe our political viewpoints are shite. The Founding Fathers were liberals, but they wouldn't be politically aligned with those that call themselves liberals today. Republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 in higher numbers than did Democrats... Liberals? By this definition, absolutely.

I guess you can make the argument that the civil rights act did not violate any social institution either.

are you seriously trying to argue that the conservatives of the 60's were all about the voting rights act??? Hell even the conservatives of 2014, on this very board, celebrated with glee when the Roberts court struck down section 4

It still fits if you're using the following definition of "liberal":

quote:

favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

Where the hell did I say that? My point is that by using this definition, the Democrats were the conservatives. IMHO, that's why these labels suck... Whether Democrats/Republicans are conservatives or liberals changes all the time, depending on a number of issues.

It's a simplistic definition of conservatism, but with a variety of different views among conservatives, that are constantly changing with time, necessarily so. It's also generally true.

this thread is not about Democrats or Republicans. You don't need a Phd in Political Science to know that those parties have changed dramatically over the years. The basic principles of "conservatives" and "liberals" change not in spirit but with the issues being discussed.

Of course I think just having two camps is silly and this country would be a lot better off if we have 8-10 different shades of each with a much larger participation of different parties in place of what we have now, but that's a different discussion altogether.
