I like big-budget science fiction films. My list, with two exceptions, bears this out. I want science fiction films to stretch the talent and imagination of visual effects experts. And the film above all else should create a vision of the future we either know that we don’t want, or know that we do.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Planet of the Apes (1968)
The Terminator (1984)
The Quiet Earth (1985)
Contact (1997)
Deep Impact (1998)
The Matrix (1999)
The Island (2005)
Watchmen (2009)

Runner-up…

Blade Runner (1982)

I was shocked it made the list and even more by his comments about it.

quote:

The Island (2005): Apart from too many minutes of gratuitous chase scenes, I think this movie is profound in its message as well as visually stunning. A rare study of science in the service of vanity, mixed with an exploration of corporate profits, human identity and free will. I’ve always viewed “Gattaca” (1997) as a lower-budget cousin of this film.

I almost posted "How can he choose The Island and leave off Gattaca?" It just doesn't make sense.

The Island isn't a terrible choice. It suffered like Sunshine in that it's a great movie that falls in the end. In the end for Sunshine is the last 15 minutes. In the End for Island is the last 40.

I'm surprised Sunshine didn't make his list though.

Well, he states that he likes big budget movies over smaller films, but... I don't get it. Gattaca is superior to the Island in almost every way, and it's not like it wasn't a mainstream Holly wood film with professional effects. Big fan of the movie.

The same could be said for his inclusion of Contact. That was a big budget movie that had about four minutes of big budget feel.

I'm sure he will get criticism for Contact, but I think that movie is great.

Scarlett Johansson>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Uma Thurman. Maybe this was the deciding factor. I can understand this.

Going to include Gattaca also. Each have their own premise, although all 3 are connected together with the protagonist defying conformity.

I understand why Tyson would like the idea of The Island, but the movie wasn't very good. It was okay. Logan's run - one of my favorite movies and TV shows from my youth - wasn't especially good either. Gattaca is IMO hands down the best movie of the 3.

I don't get all the hate for The Island. While it did get "Hollywooded" up, there is quite a great story in that film.
