Make sure you have Service Pack 3 and add more RAM?

Bit of a vague question since we don't know what you have as far as updates. Very cheap and easy upgrade is memory. It would run you about 40 bucks. Aside from that here are a few things off the top of my head:
- Run a defragmentation program overnight.
Defrag
- Increase paging file size.
Paging file
- Hard drive space. Say you have 120gb HD and only 2gb available then this could cause sluggish performance.
- Run a malware scan.
Malware bytes
- Clean up temporary files and registry.

What these guys said. RAM first probably.
But really since it's an old PC, I doubt you do much gaming on it - think about replacing XP with Linux.

I am fine with either of those although I know nothing about them or how to download them. I have doubled the ram space. This is a laptop do I have enough ram for Linux or Ubuntu. I would love to do this asap.

Ubuntu is just a flavor of Linux to generalize. Just like XP, Windows 7, 8 are flavors of MS Windows.
Just google ubuntu and you will land right there.
I don't know how much RAM you have, but chances are it's fine for Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a more bloated flavor of Linux, but it's user friendly and an easier transition from the MS world.

Oh and btw, before you start dropping a new OS on your laptop, make sure you back up any important info you have on it - pics, etc. Just sayin'.

Thank you I cleaned everything off of it today and ran Ccleaner so I should be good. I know I am showing my ignorance but does ubuntu just take over and xp is gone or what happens?

What are the odds someone holding out this long has a 64bit XP machine and can use more than 3Gigs of RAM...

I have not tried this but found a way to tweak xp to get windows updates. Use at your own risk.

Ubuntu will have a wizard asking you how you want to install. In your case, if you decide you're going to install Ubuntu, you will no longer be using XP, so wipe the drive and let Ubuntu use it all.

I don't know how to wipe the drive and if I wiped it would I lose Ubuntu too. I am currently downloading it on the xp. It says it is going to take 3 hours

I have SP3. Outside of that, do a long reformat and reinstall SP3. That's what I did. My PC flies

If you want to try it out, you can put Ubuntu on a USB memory stick and boot from that. It won't affect your existing files at all. This is also a good recovery option if Windows becomes corrupted.

I still have close to an hour on the download. I just hope I can wipe XP when I'm done

I hate that you are in this position man..This is going to be the difference on the Tech board...People that deal with users day to day, and people who say "put an OS that you've never heard of on there."
