I made a similar post a few days back and I've now decided on the AR platform over a M14 style

Looking to stay in the $1000 range but will go up to $1500 : 556/223 : want something in the 16-18" barrel length, for plinking, range shooting and want something fairly light weight, accurate with a good trigger and smooth. Not going to put a scope on it for now, iron sights and maybe a holographic sight like EOtech

I don't want to do a build but not opposed to purchasing a complete upper and lower of separate manufacturer.

A lot of those are pretty interchangeable also. But DPMS is definitely last

Agree with the order, but the gap between S&W and DPMS is pretty big.

Guy at work is swearing by his new Windham. Where does it fall in that pecking order?

of course custom manufacturers are going to be thought of higher than the "Box Store" gun manufacturers.

About where Colt and Sig are. Maybe a little lower. Windham is the old Bushmaster. Same facility, same employees, different name.

I actually own a Windham upper. It's on my AR now.

How many people can really give an honest answer because they have owned most of these over several years with lots of rounds through each them?

Thank you for replies: guys. Basically DPMS is way below and I should stay away.

I have heard really good things about the S & W VTAC model. Anyone here with experience with them?

Within the next hour or so I'm going to post a list of models from each manufacturer that fit my criteria. And with the help from the good folks here at the OB board I might be able to make up my mind from all the choices and actually pick one, order it and then go blast the mother fricker and report back

I think the same thing every time I see a question like this.

Although, whether or not DPMS is a quality manufacturer....I would still not purchase for plain fear of the looks I would get for owning.

Spend $1000 or less on the rifle and the other $500 on the optic. For real, Eotech (I know there are haters out there) has up to $75 rebate that started a couple of days ago.

10 yrs ago DPMS made a respectable product ... not the best, but affordable with decent quality

in 2007 they sold out to Cerberus (Freedom Group) . Within the last 5-6 yrs, many other companies have passed up DPMS by focusing on "quality not quantity" . Cerberus Capitol is basically a bunch of bean counters looking to turn profit.

I'd say S&W and DPMS are very close. Both companies have value ARs in the 500-700 range. Both produce a solid high end AR around $1000.
