Hiring managers, how many applications do you get for an open position?

The cover letter thread got me thinking about this question.
Also if you feel comfortable to tell, I would be interested to hear what position you tend to hire for. Do you get an absurd number after posting the job opening on a job board or the company's career website?

Go on Linkedin. They say how many people on there are applying for a position. Double or triple that for other methods. Anywhere from 100-400 for good jobs it seems like.

When I got hired for my job I was told I was picked out of 22 applicants

Interesting, I would have thought the number would be higher.

I never knew this. I'll have to check it out.

Our old hiring manager asked me to kick off a hiring spree. He said last time he got:
400 resumes -> 100 phone interviews -> 30 on site interviews -> 8 offers -> 3 hires

That must be quite a hassle
How do you deal with it?

They normally get filtered by HR first for basic qualifications. Last position, 30 or so. Interviewed 5

The online applications are funneled into a program that allows me to place into subfolders for reviewed, follow-up, not a fit, etc.
The most frustrating part is the influx of "can I speak to the hiring manager?" calls. At least I can laugh at some of the resumes/applications.

So HR passed on 30 applications out of all of them? Do you get to choose the 5?

Any funny stories come to mind that you could share?

This is a Pax Romana time for hiring managers. They could easily cherry pick from a boatload of overqualified, over-educated candidates who went to prestigious schools. and this recession has no end in sight. shitty economy might be the new norm.

Few. We go after the people we want for the job.

I believe I know exactly what you are talking about from experience.
Are you basically saying that they don't have to go out of their way to find employees in this economy.

When I first started on my project there were about ~150 openings. I was told about ~3000 people applied.
No clue for my latest position, the job was basically posted as a formality.

I do quite enjoy pictures on resumes though.
I bet.

You are correct. We are still very much in a bad economy. It's painful to see how many qualified applicants we get for just one opening. I can sympathize with people looking for work or a better paying job and not finding it.
We had over 400 applicants for the position we most recently posted. 10 years ago we'd have seen maybe 50 applicants with 5-10 real stars.
We've honestly turned down a lot of very qualified people - and we often rule out folks who we think are over qualified to the point that they'd quit when the economy improved.
The 18- 35 crowd seems to be struggling more than anyone right now as far as employment. I'm thankful that I have a very good job now.
We've seen tremendous interest with our college recruiting programs as well, but not to the level of the traditional, open posting. College recruiting the best route to go for young people....they have a much better shot there if they can use it.
