What is your definition of a sport?

And what sets it apart from a game or an event? I think we all consider football, basketball, baseball and hockey sports, but there's a lot of gray area for other activities. Using your definition, how would you classify the following:
Bowling
Tennis
Track & Field
Skiing
Golf
Cheerleading
Bull Fighting
NASCAR/Indy Racing
Fishing
Skateboarding (and other X-Games activities)
Ping Pong
Bowling
Tennis

Skiing
Golf
Cheerleading
Bull Fighting
NASCAR/Indy Racing
Fishing
Skateboarding (and other X-Games activities)
Ping Pong

I feel like I've come up with the perfect definitions.
A sport is a contest which requires physicality and has a definite winner not picked by a judge. Poker does not fit because it's not physical. Auto racing DOES fit because it is physical and there is a definite winner.
A competition/contest/event/match/whatever you want to call it can be similar to a sport, except a winner is chosen by a judge. So ice skating, gymnastics, etc. are all not "sports".
HOWEVER, a sport doesn't require athletes, and a contest doesn't mean athletes aren't participating.
I define an athlete as somebody who can improve their physical skills and that means they can improve in their sport just by getting more "athletic". For example, you can be turn from a skinny nerd to LeBron James, and it won't help you in auto racing. Therefore, although auto racing is a sport, the competitors are NOT athletes.
Yet in cheerleading, athleticism definitely matters. Therefore, cheerleaders are athletes, but cheerleading is NOT a sport. It's an athletic competition.

Any athletic exercise where your opponent can DIRECTLY affect what you do.
Nothing with judges, times, or courses.

If ESPN covers it, it's a sport IMO

That's pretty good. I also define a "sport" as an event where your actions are directly impacted in real time by an opponent. For example, in track, you run your race. No one can interfere with you. You run your race, they run theirs and the best time wins. But in football, basketball, etc., you attempt to complete an action (catch a ball, score a touchdown, etc.)and your opponent is allowed to counter that through direct physical contact.

I agree with the opponent component.
So a marathon or cross-country skiing where everyone is on the course at the same time and some strategy is involved, far more of a sport to me than each person making a timed run.
