Some of us quickly speculated that the two things were related, while some publications have simply assumed without question that it was Oliver's pleas that brought the system down. To some extent I hope that's the case, though I do fear a bit the kinds of comments people might be leaving.

Either way, the irony of the FCC having trouble under heavy loads concerning net neutrality was not lost on many people, who didn't miss the opportunity to tweet some replies mocking the whole net neutrality proposal.

we need more than commenting. I have suggested in the past that all technology workers do a slow down at work. this would get a lot of people to notice.

Some people have suggested that major sites may do another blackout like they did in protest toward SOPA and PIPA. That would be one of the most effective ways, especially if sites like facebook and netflix did it.

in terms of actual policy/power, can the FCC even allow net neutrality as the laws are written now?

i think the USSC stripped them of the power and they're just creating the regs according to law prior to having their regs invalidated

I think this would be the most effective way to get the point across. More than half the people I know don't even have an idea what net neutrality is going to do. If their Facebook/Instagram, Netflix, Amazon, eBay, Google/YouTube shut down for a day, 100% would be affected, pay attention, and raise all hell.

It is a shame that it is not going to make one damn bit of difference.

It started with the US giving up any control it had over internet naming.

The chairman of the FCC essentially works for the cable companies.

The internet as we know it is done.

I think this would be the best thing to do. Place a preview in front of netflix videos discussing the importance of the net neurality issue.

Most people probably don't even realize this is going on. Like he said, the discussions usually sound pretty dull and boring.

The only other option is hope Google makes some major breakthroughs with their satellite internet and have amazing speeds... But then its just a waiting game before they decide to screw us too.

Amazon

Amazon is a $70 billion dollar company. Do you realize how much money they would lose shutting down for 1-day? None of these companies are going to risk that much revenue and potential stock loss.

They don't have to actually shut down their sites. They could do like Google and others did for SOPA and either change the background to black or some other very prominent change that brings attention to the topic.

Comcast, the number one cable provider in the country, spent $18.8 million on lobbying members of Congress last year. The Philadelphia Inquirer notes the cable company outspent Google, ExxonMobil, Verizon and Boeing, among others. In fact, Comcast and its partners have given $2 million to candidates in both parties for this election cycle up to this point.

The top recipients of Comcast’s donations are: House Speaker John Boehner, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Sen. Chris Coons (D – DE), Sen. Edward Markey (D – MA), Sen. Mark Pryor (D – AR), Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK), Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, and Rep. Greg Walden, (R – OR).

We're all fricked, as usual.

Yeah, it's extreme, but I'd bet at least 80% of the public has no clue what "net neutrality" means. Maybe like a Amazon "Prime-less" day "prank" to show the effects of it would be better?

I don't know. The point just needs to get across before we're all f'ed.
