Just watched Into Darkness again and holy shite this guy is an idiot. Not only does he needlessly risk everyone's life with the stunt with the volcano but he makes mistake after mistake in the lead up to capturing Khan. He lets Scotty quit, completely ignoring his very valid concerns about what the effect the new photons might have on the warp core and THEN he decides to go to Kronos anyway even after the warp core is damaged and his new chief of engineering clearly has no idea what he's doing. And that's just the first 1/3rd of the movie.

He consistently takes ridiculous risks and while his bravery in saving the ship is admirable, the only reason the Enterprise was even in that situation is because of his reckless decisions.

Very young captain. The best teacher is experience and poor choices.

In the movie is a very untested Captain trying to prove himself. By the end of the movie he realizes he no longer needs to prove himself...he simply needs to lead.

In the Original series is he is a great leader but not remotely professional until they get to the movies.

I think that was the literal point and intended.

Remember the conversation with Pike early on?

He shoots from the hip in defiance of the rules and skated by on luck, although Kirk took it as validation of ability.

The events of the movie were a big growing up for him.

I did find that exchange amusing because it was exactly that rule disregarding hotshot behavior that got him the Enterprise in the first place.

You just described James T. Kirk's career.

Doesn't matter. Two aliens at the same time.

FWIW, just watched Into Darkness for the first time yesterday. I dug it.

This. Kirk starts out as an idiot but learns his lessons as he takes his lumps during the movie. You can see him mature as he learns to listen to Spock and check himself. It was quite the character development.

He didn't risk anyone's life. He exposed the ship to the natives.

Well, at least not anyone other than himself, Bones, Spock, Sulu, and Uhura.

He SAVED Spock against all regulations then sacrificed himself for the good of the ship.

Have you forgotten that Spock "looked up the answer online" by consulting Old Spock about Khan?
