..the House voted in Friday's wee hours to prohibit the federal government from interfering with medical marijuana laws passed by 32 states and the District of Columbia.

Here's a link to the final vote count. It was only 49 Republicans that voted yes. Enough to join with the Democrats to pass the bill. LINK

Regardless this is a major shift in federal marijuana drug policy.

Institutional inertia is the only thing that's standing in the way of ending the war on drugs and that's falling by the wayside with each passing year.

We're going to see a significant majority of drugs legalized in our lifetimes.

Rather than through activist judges in the federal judicial system this is a beautiful example of modern federalism...the states exercising their real power. I hope state legislatures realize the power they actually have over the federal government and modern federalism becomes contagious and spread to other issues. Congress does not have much of a choice when a majority of states ban together.

Doubt this.

Too many jobs would be eliminated. And there is a huge difference between legalizing a fairly harmless drug compared to one that isn't harmless.

I don't see them ever legalizing anything like coke.

You mean the ones that benefit from the WOD?

Not really.

Someone smoking a blunt or snorting up crack does not harm me whatsoever. Nor does selling and buying it.

I don't do weed or crack because well, they're crack and weed and they would frick me up, not because of some law telling me not to do it.

I like it. Free market of legislative ideas across the states. If it is bad a smaller amount of harm will be done. If it is great other states will follow suit.

Title is misleading. I am very surprised that Chris Smith of NJ voted against it even though NJ has medical marijuana. What a dope.

If only Congress and the courts would leave most of these issue up to state's rights.

Are you referring to lidocaine? I know lidocaine is molecularly similar to cocain but not exactly. (I remember making lidocaine in organic lab.)

I wish they stood with states rights more often but this is an outlier.

When there is a majority of states behind a particular issue congress really has no choice. States rights is thrust upon them and congress's position is moot (regardless of their approval). Federalism is tested when a minority of states are not thwarted by congress. Post civil war congresses have failed that test more times than not.
