If Ernie Els moved to the US (he's from south africa for those of you who dont know him) and became a citizen how would you label him? He would truly be an African American.

One of my students is black and from Bermuda. He is not a US citizen. If I had to describe him I cant call him an African American.

I hate this term. Totally nondiscriptive.

Do you call blacks black or AA? Why?

Black.

A term for a given race should really work no matter where they live.

I say both, depending on the setting. I in general don't reference race that much, i mean, why would you?

Most of my black friends prefer the term black.

Yep. The only time I ever get odd looks for using the term black is from white folks.

Also, will there ever become a time when AA is an offensive term or are we just going to stick with that one?

And, it totally ruins the question of if you are a pilot of black helicopters or a black helicopter pilot!!!

Same here. I say "black." And when I say it at work, my white colleagues will look at me as if to say "did you just say black? Are you allowed to say that?"

It's kind of funny. But yeah sorry, I realized at around age 17 that "African American" doesn't make any sense to label a black person.
