Just interviewed for a job in San Luis Obispo. I know there is a general dislike for California but I kind of liked what I saw. Anybody live here or in California anwhere have any helpful thoughts?

I don't like the politics of that state but the vibe of the people is cool IMO.

Most people would live in California if they could afford to and could find a job there.

I lived in the Bay Area for a few years. SLO is a great area but can feel a bit removed, which is fine for most of the people that live there. It's a nice little beach/college town.

As for California as a whole, it was OK but I couldn't wait to get back to Texas. The high cost of living and the people in general ruined California for me.

If you're young, unattached...go for it. Road goes both ways.

Ok, well not MOST.

But seems like the only hate I've ever seen towards California is from Southerners

That I can agree with. It's true, most people in Louisiana hate California and they haven't even been there.

The cost of living kinda scares the shite out of me, I'd be making good money as a professor at cal poly but not great money.

I was born and lived in the Central Valley for 7 years. Family moved away and then I was back for 3.5 years for work after I graduated.
San Louis is a pretty awesome city and the central coast is great if you're into beach living. Great weather year round. The girls are spectacular. Food is good. Nightlife was alright when I was there.
It really depends on what you're looking for, but the central coast would be one of the few places I'd move back to in California.

I agree, but its not for the mediocre. If you're elite or at the top of your field and especially if it is a creative or technical position then you can do very well there. If you're just a mediocre worker bee then competition will be fierce for a limited amount of positions.

eta: I have a brother that travels for his job so he can live anywhere. He recently moved to inland Cali and although I was skeptical of anyone moving to a desert like area, I am becoming jealous. His home wasn't that expensive, he lives right by all kinds of mountains, has non-stop sun, and theres more to do than I realized. He recently bought dirt bikes for him and his son which looks fun.

My company's HQ used to be in Solvang. That is a very conservative part of CA. Lots of farms and wineries.

Seemed very boring to me to tell you the truth.

Eta: my bad. I was thinking you said Los Olivos. SLO is right there, though. Sort of out of the "scene" by CA standards... Who might be a big benefit.

Well for nurses....CA is a great place to work. CA pays their nurses very well. You can easily make 100K on up as a nurse in CA.

There's a wide variety to California in all things. Geography, people, culture, weather, you name it. SLO is in that central coast area that is sparsely populated for California standards. Probably a shite load of immigrant farmers around.
If I didn't have ties to these parts, I may move out to California.

You mean family as in your parents? Or wife and kids?

Live in Cali. Originally from Louisiana. SLO is a fun beach town with a lot of attractive girls from the university. It's 3 hours from LA and 3 hours from the Bay Area.

As long as you understand ppl are a little bit more liberal it'll be fine. Taxes suck, liberals suck and cost of houses suck but everything else is good. Good outdoors, lots to do. Beautiful.

Oh hell no. I'd move to Florida before I'd ever move to California.
