Cali is f'n awesome. Would move back in a heartbeat, hope to soon.

SLO is sorta a no man's land but the Central Coast is nice, it's just not SoCal or the Bay and that's where everything reverberates from out there. It'd be a slower pace which actually might be extremely nice.

You'll have to travel to see shows and entertainment options but you'd be 1/2 between SF and LA so that could be a plus. One bad thing is the Bakersfield trash goes to the Beach in that area so be prepared for that.

It seems like there's a lot to do just by talking to people during my interview. Mountains, fishing, kayaking, I've never seen so many beautiful women in all my life, etc. I just thought it was desolate desert.

All of the above.
Kids close to high school graduation, so I wouldn't move there now for them, plus my folks and wife folks are nearby.
I have spent a lot of time there and the wife likes it, too. And we actually considered moving there before we had kids.

It's a fantastic little town. Lived in Monterey on a contract and visited SLO multiple times. My wife and I would love to raise our son in that area but it's very expensive.

Why is that?

The cost of living kinda scares the shite out of me, I'd be making good money as a professor at cal poly but not great money.

According to a cost of living calculator, SLO has the same cost of living as Juneau, and I do fine here and am not wealthy by any means. Housing is the biggest problem. Everything else is reasonable.

SLO is not that bad compared to SD, SF or the good parts of LA. Rent/Mortgage for what you get will still give you shell shock if you are not used to it, but overall not bad. Don't expect good sports fans, and they love soccer at Poly.

As someone who has lived in multiple places in both (currently North palm beach) I couldn't disagree more. Cali is exponentially more beautiful than Florida to me and the weather is much nicer as well. Better waves, mountains, and nicer populace as well. The liberal thing is a bit overblown in many places IMO and this is coming from a guy who drove almost 18 hrs round-trip to vote against Obama due to ballot not coming in mail.

That I can agree with. It's true, most people in Louisiana hate California and they haven't even been there.

Yep. I had a dislike for California. Now that I live here I love it.

I just looked up some rentals and they aren't bad. Less expensive than here. Standard West Coast prices.

Right. Most folks tend to congregate with people similar to themselves anyway.

You lost me on that one. I much prefer Florida's beaches. I prefer calm, warm water though. Clearer the better because I'm paranoid as hell about sharks and other sea monsters biting my junk.

Anyway, I agree with most of everything else you said. California is amazing. Could do without a lot of the people - but Florida has a people problem too.

Go to SLO. Best weather and scenery in the country. I'm as staunch of a conservative as there is... but at the end of the day, it's about my experience as a human being. Whatever surrounding or environment that makes me the happiest is what I care about. I'd move to California(FTR, please don't call it Cali) in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, I'm stuck in New Orleans... which is a good compromise that I can live with. But I'd rather be out West.

you can find plenty of places in Cali that are not expensive, just make sure to shop around extensively to find some great deals.

People seem to think that Cali is only SF and LA, there's a lot more to it than that. And the liberal thing is way overblown, there are tons of conservative people in this state.

Well then you backup my point that California has better waves. it's like a damn Lake down here most of the time.

Agree. People get so butt hurt over politics that they lose track of the truly important things.

Is there a concern over nuclear fall out getting into the water over there? Water is already hard to come by and as new desalination projects start coming into fruition it is critical that their oceans remain clean.

Well, y'all have convinced me, it's not as bad as it's made out to be. And I could really get used to this weather.

I was born in So. CA but raised in San Fran. I have lived in Louisiana for 32 years (thought I would only be here for a few years of grad school). There is a lot to love about CA (ocean, desert, mountains, redwoods, etc.) but I will not be moving back. Building our new home in WA...too many people in CA. That said, SLO is amazing and is one of the few cities I would consider moving to. If you can afford it, do not miss out on the opportunity...congrats to the OP.

I have skied the northern mountains (Lake Tahoe) and partied in the south (San Diego, Anaheim). Sounds like you'll get the best of both worlds.

I have been California dreaming since the last time I left...

Do it man!
