how would the dynamic change, if at all, relative to democrats being generally for amnesty and republicans being generally against amnesty?

In other words, are people for/against amnesty because of the electoral college and votes, or are they for/against it based on sovereignty and law?

We'd have a mine field running along the southern border.

Very honest, insightful; very good question.

I would still be against it. If someone wants to become a citizen come through the front door, not over the back fence.

I have a feeling that there would be a lot of flip flopping on the issue from the right and the left.

It would be pretty funny actually to hear Fox espousing the merits of amnesty and MSNBC talking about the detriments and securing borders.

I can guarantee that Obama and company would drop the issue like a hot potato and simply quit bringing it up without taking a stand one way or the other on the merits of amnesty again.

I give this opinion off the assumption I have, that the majority of illegals are Hispanic. I believe that if you took citizenship out of the equation, most Hispanics would vote GOP. I base this off how religious most hispanic families are and their work ethic. I think that the only reason they vote Democrat at this time is due to wanting all their relatives to be given citizenship.

I think it is funny immigration and amnesty goes against the democrats environmental policies. How many more buildings, cars, roads, parking lots (or less natural resources) can this country live with? The real threat to the environment at this point is people and the democrats want more here.

This IS the flop.

The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was introduced in the Senate by Alan Simpson (R) on May 23, 1985, and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan (R) on November 6, 1986.

It's funny how we take things out of historical context all the time in this country, as if this is the first time everything's happened.

The fact is that neither party wants immigration reform because the current system is working for them. Large masses of laborers with no status in our country provide a bargain basement labor rate.

If one party sees the other gaining a clear advantage over the other, then shite will change.

They would not be eligible to vote, they were illegals. Hypothetical did not change their status.

there definitely would be. but I don't think immigration is a right/left issue. Its populism vs. mainstream politics. There are plenty on the left against immigration, they may not be as vocal as the right but they are against it.

And hell, didn't mccain push the amnesty bill forward with Bush's support?

We would definitely have voter ID at every polling place, though....

I would still be against any form of amnesty but you can bet your arse that Dems would absolutely endorse strict enforcement of existing immigration law.

My guess is the political landscape would be turned 180 degrees, with the GOP leading the charge.

However, even with most polls showing illegals would probably vote Dem, the GOP is still trying to come up with a plan.

As for me personally, I would be against it. Illegal still means what its supposed to mean at my house.

If they spoke english and were either highly educated or skilled I wouldn take a little different look at amnesty but most coming from our southern boarder have none of those qualities.

Yes, we would.

There would the mine field, a wall 40 feet tall and 6 feet thick, and mounted .50 cal machine guns every 200 yards.

Obama would be ordering drone strikes on Mexico.

We already have a good case study with civil liberties. All of a sudden drone strikes and warrantless spying are acceptable. It used to be the President was Hitler II for engaging in such activities.
