Just received an unexpected job offer that would put me on track to return to Baton Rouge in August.

My wife and I bought our first home in July of 2012, but don't know if we could realistically sell it before we move. We don't have much equity in the home because we only put 3% down for the FHA loan. However, I have a friend that has owned a property management and real estate company here in Tx for 15 years. I will be speaking with him about our current home later today.

We recently hit our target emergency fund amount, but don't have anything else besides an IRA. I'm worried about depleting that fund since my wife is expecting our first child.

Renting an apartment may be our best option in the near term, but I worry about finding one that is spacious enough for a family and not prone to college parties (I feel old saying that).

I would definitely recommend selling your current home before buying something else. Even if you have to drop your price significantly to get rid of it, it's better than just paying a house note on a house you are not living in.

That is what we are leaning towards, but there is a very strong rental market in our neighborhood. It seems enticing, but even with a property manager it may not be worth it with an older home.

Your best bet for rentals is check outside of BR Proper. The burbs like Denham Springs, Gonzales, and Prairieville will have much better options for rentals if you have a family. Thats what the wife and I did. Renting in Denham and really enjoy it.

I guess the real issue is trying to finding something that is also convenient for getting around. I'll be splitting time between obligations in mid city, a business on Siegen Lane, and LSU. Relatively, none of this is actually far away, but I want to spend as little time in traffic as possible.

Yea, honestly if I could find something in Mid City then I can avoid quite a bit of the traffic. Unfortunately the safer looking apartments there around whole foods are costly.

There is a chance, albeit slim, that my wife and I will be relocating in August for 12-14 months for an assignment for her work.

We have a 2/1 in Mid-City that we'd just rent out for the year...I'll keep this thread in mind if that occurs.

If something comes up you can email me at bmathe9@hotmail

We just started looking around, but I really haven't found much home rental wise in the area I like.

They rarely end up online...sign goes out on a Wednesday and someone is moving in on Saturday.

I moved to Baton Rouge for a new job a year ago this next week and this is exactly what we did. We're still in an apartment to this day but close on a house in 2 weeks. I didn't anticipate finding a house taking this long, but I do not regret a thing.

This whole year we've been able to get a feel for all areas of BR and make a more informed decision as to where we want to call home. You really need to live here for some time to get a true feel for the area.

I currently live in Enclave at cedar lodge and love it. Staff is great, great pool, great workout room, and above all feel 100% safe at home. I'm living here a year lease but plan on looking for houses to buy starting in 5 months. Wanted to ease into moving back and with me and the wife clearing six figures after everything taken out we are saving for 20% on about a 250k home. Don't believe in paying pmi and its only 50k to save.

That's really not a desirable part of the city. There was a shooting there not too long ago.
