No sound through surround sound..............

Hooked up PC through Netgear wireless to TV via HDMI (awesome by the way) but can only get audio from TV and not surround sound after trying it on different inputs, channels etc.
WTF?
Does the optical (infrared cable) have anything do with it.
Thanks in advance

Can you elaborate a bit more on that ?

Clarify a little further. You're connected over wireless or you're over hdmi?
Do me a favor and break it down from source-->cable-->input connector on receiver...etc all the way through your system. Don't need exact model numbers, but something like "PC-->HDMI out-->HDMI on receiver--1-->HDMI on tv--2-->speaker outputs" (1 and 2 denoting they both come from the receiver).
Also, does surround work on other stuff? If so, bore me with the details as above, but once it follows the same path, just trail off, ie "satellite box -->HDMI out--> receiver HDMI in..."

Netgear PTV3000-wirelessly hooks up your laptop to HDTV including audio.

So PC > Wireless > Netgear > HDMI > TV ?

Is it plugged into the tv or into your receiver? If into the tv, you either need a tv with Audio Return Channel (ARC) on one of the HDMI ports back into your receiver which also supports ARC, or some form of "audio out" on the tv into the receiver, typically optical audio in my experience with LCD/plasma tvs.
ETA: sounds like you're not putting sound into the surround sound, which is your problem. Plugging the netgear device into a spare HDMI on the receiver also should work.

So nothing connected to the receiver ?
Ideally you should be doing PC > Wireless > Netgear > HDMI > Receiver > HDMI > TV

Netgear>HDMI>TV
TV>RGA(?)cables>receiver
TV>RGA(?)cables>receiver

If "RGA" you are referring to a red and a white cable pair (sometimes called RCA), then I know your problem.

yes RCA that's it.
SG may have something, what you think

Well RCA is strictly 2 channel Stereo.

If you're running RCA out from your tv and into your receiver's input ( and the ins and out on the devices are what's important, not the cables. They don't have direction), then you're pumping 2.0 channel stereo (one channel is red, one is white...these are "analog" cables). Now, if the TV has an optical out and you plug it into the receiver optical "in" (again, pay close attention to the ports), despite being a single cable, this digital cable can carry full surround sound.
It seems like this isn't your problem, though, as usually a receiver will default to full stereo and play out of satellite speakers when it only has a stereo input. Have you changed that portion of the receiver's settings?

I didn't want to post an explanation to something that wasn't the problem!
ETA: the fastest fix- if you have another HDMI port on your receiver, plug the netgear into that. Problem will be solved when you change the receiver input.

It's irrelevant. No worries. So think of it like this:
Your receiver has inputs a,b,c,d,etc. its job is to put those inputs to the surround sound but only after "splitting" the video off and sending it to the tv.
Your tv also has inputs a,b,c,d,etc. its job is to take the signal and play it. It only sends the sound to its own speakers unless it has something plugged into the output section. Even still, what seems to be plugged into your "output" section is stereo (2 speakers). You're totally bypassing the receiver with the first signal (I would change that) and sending the wrong kind of signal for surround sound to the receiver (though in multi-stereo mode, you should get sound from all speakers on the right input, likely "tv").
