I already have a nook and bought my daughter a kindle fire but was just offered a fairly new kindle paperwhite for $50. Is it worth it?

My sister's previous kindle bit the dust, and I had an offer to buy the paper white at a discount, I think $44 was the final price. She's very happy with it and would've paid whatever the regular price was. In fact, she was having a discussion with her husband about replacing it at full price before I sneakily gifted it to her for Mother's Day. I believe she particularly likes the ability to read in bed with the lights out. I do not know of other advantages/disadvantages to her previous two devices.

Paper white or e-ink is the way to go if you're a serious reader. It's the right tool for the job.

Do you have the nook tablet or the e-reader?

Paperwhite is the best out there if your primary purpose is reading. The Fire is just another tablet.

$50 Paperwhite is well worth it if you read; if not that's a cheap arse gift for someone who does and will for sure appreciate it. I got one on sale and got one for my mom for mothers day. She loves hers. The one "without offers" is subsidized by Amazon on ads.
It's easy to download books online (gutenberg project, others, need .mobi file) and manage them with Calibre. The Paperwhite has the lit screen that makes everything clear and light. Charge lasts forever as well.
The subsidized ads only come up when you have Kindle locked and browsing through the menu, never in a book. Minor inconvenience for me, not worth the $20.

The paperwhite is easily the best for reading. I had an old 2nd gen kindle keyboard and got a new paperwhite. I love the ability to read without a light and the font is a little more clear now. Battery is a huge deal coming from a tablet.

The Kindle Paperwhite is probably my favorite purchase in the last ~2 years.
If you read alot it's a must-have.

I wouldn't worry about those ads either. They really are non invasive.
