I'm thinking about getting my dad a soundbar for Father's Day. Want to get this board's opinion

Don't waste your money.

What's his current setup look like? He'll probably get better sound out of a decent pair of bookshelf speakers if they fit in his entertainment center. I'm a big floor-standing full-range tower kind of guy, but those are notoriously bad gifts for a number of reasons.
And, since it comes up a lot, center-speakers like a sound bar will practically sound like mono from across the room. It will be hard to distinguish what's on the left and what's on the right. To some, this is no big deal. But albums are recorded and remastered in stereo for a reason. Lots and lots of what is broadcasted meticulously sets up what's left on screen to the left speaker and right on screen to the right speaker. I do wholly endorse space-saving when necessary, but I don't like center-sound. It's just missing most of the soundstage you get when you put a little space between your speakers.

I got a Vizio for about 300$. Came with a wireless subwoofer and two wireless speakers. Also has bluetooth. Excellent sound quality.

I have this one. Pretty sure I bought it at this price($199.00) new on Black Friday.
This one and there's a Sony soundbar(similar price point) that are the consistently best reviewed as far as soundbars goes.
Overall happy with it. Easy set-up, nice to have the subwoofer wireless and the rear 2 sattelite speakers hard wire to the subwoofer. Decent sound, decent low range. One nifty feature I like is that I can pair any bluetooth device with the sound bar and play music or what-not through it.
Cons: as with most soundbar systems inputs are limited to what the soundbar has. In this soundbar, no HDMI input for sound, so you rely on optical(x1), digital/coax(x1), 3.5mm(x1). And obviously, the sound bar isn't going to provide the range or power compared to the traditional A/V receiver, stand-alone speaker combos.
But overall, good piece of equipment for the price point and non-audiophile person. I will eventually upgrade to a traditional higher quality system, but for now, this suffices for movies, gaming, etc.

Do you have a budget?
Around 300 bucks.
And hes got a Samsung TV.
I've told him to get a receiver and some Klipsch bookshelf or floor speakers, but he doesn't want to do that.
He wants a soundbar because they're cheaper, take up less space, and hes only working with the speakers built into the TV so anything would be an improvement to that

I've been happy with my samsung sound bar and wireless sub. I do wish it had some wireless speakers to mount in the back if the room though.
The Bluetooth feature is awesome.

Sonos recently released a new sound bar. It works with the other sonos components and it has a subwoofer and rear speaker option available. Sonos is on the higher price end but there stuff is top notch

No offense but there is no speaker in the world that has "excellent" sound quality for $300. Yes, diminishing returns are reached at some point but "excellent" sound quality starts at a higher price than $300.

This is the one I've had for about 2.5 years. I have my apple TV hooked up to it as well as my cable box. I haven't had any issues with it

Excellent sound quality is subjective. It depends on who is listening.
The fact is that these days the masses want easy to connect, easy to use and aesthetically pleasing, sound quality be damned.

I am going to have 2 of the sonos soundbars and subs in my house when its done. One in my bedroom mounted on the wall under my tv and using 2 in-cieling speakers as surrounds and one bar/sub for my daughters TV room. I could have gone all out on surround stuff and got better sound maybe but the sonos is so easy to use and I have them throughout the house anyway.

It really isn't. Most people have never heard excellent sound quality. All they know is loud with boomy one note bass. That is neither excellent or accurate.

Sonos is fine. Sound bars in general are fine for what they are used for. Unless you have a dedicated room there is only so much you can get out of it.

Agreed...in the master bedroom I originally planed to have just ceiling speakers hooked to a connect amp and run the tv through it for tv watching. Then I found out they had an update that allows a connect amp to run 2 speakers as stereo rear in a 5.1 setup hooked to the playbar for the front....so thats the plan. Should sound pretty good for laying in bed tv watching lol
