My old router isn't giving me enough wifi coverage in my new house. A friend recommended the Apple AirPort Extreme. Anyone have experience with these? Worth the money, or is there something better and cheaper?

I do have an iPhone and Apple TV, but I'm not strictly apple.

How big is the house ?

Single story ?

You may be better off with a router, and a good dedicated Wifi Access Point

2100 sqft, single story.

The house isn't so big as the router is terrible

I would say to stay away from the Apple, but then again I have an irrational dislike of Apple.

I would agree with this. I have the 2GB time capsule but there is no need for him to go with that for the devices he has.

It's not a bad router, but I would go with the Asus ac-66u over anything with the notable exception of the newest Linksys router once the DD-wrt firmware is released. I think the model number WRT-1900.

But OP, your best bet for the fastest speeds is to have one router on one endish of the house with a gigabit port connected an AP on the other side with one, long Ethernet cable ran through the wall to be out of site.

The AC Buffalo Airstation has a pretty good range on it, too.

haven't tried the AC version, but I have the Asus rt-n66u and it's been great. Replaced a Linksys E3000 running tomato, and the Asus is stable and fast with the stock firmware.

They've really just outperformed everyone in the last two generations of routers. The wrt from Linksys looks like it will effing compete. Tomato either has or will be releasing firmware for it soon. Dd-wrt as well. And it's hardware seems to be untopped. They're both in the top tier of cost though (~$200). The Buffalo Airstation is much cheaper and at least comparable.

Then again, these routers really are overkill, but at least they'll last a long time without having a problem.
