Curious because the season lasts later now than in the early 90s. My baby sister was born June 8, 1991 and celebrated two LSU national titles on her birthday. Now, it's late June before this is done. NCAA plays less games now, so how did teams used to squeeze in all these games? I saw one stats when Witchita State played over 80 games!!

The spring season started earlier and the NCAA allowed fall ball.

There used to not be a uniform start date so some teams would start play in January. Also the NCAA put a limit on the numbers of games you could play in the early 90s

It was great for baseball fans. Show up at 10:00 in the morning and leave the park at 11:00 at night, sometimes later.

It seems better because the memories are so good. In reality it was a much crappier format.

Not really. Look at the Indiana regional...pretty obvious the committee is doing it's best to get a big 10 team to Omaha.

Except we'd get postseason baseball at the box WAY less often

This. You'd see four solid days of baseball with several quality teams in each regional and someone was going to Omaha. But it really rewarded the teams with deep staffs and in today's "everyone gets a trophy" society the NC$$ wanted more parity and, as usual, doesn't give a shite about the fan experience, so we get these crap regionals and made-for-TV supers and who cares about the fans. And, yes, I am a grumpy old man and it was uphill both ways to Clearwood Elementary!

From '88-'98 (the years of the six-team regionals & the glory years of LSU baseball, which may be why I remember them so fondly) LSU hosted 9 regionals & won 7.

The Supers are played in a best of three series.

Baseball is supposed to be played in a series.

And with wooden bats. And without a DH. I get it. But if I wanted to watch MLB, I'd just watch MLB.

One of the biggest things that pisses me off about ESPN's coverage of the CWS. All they want to talk about is the prospects and the draft instead of just enjoying the game for the sake of the game. I think they just don't get it sometimes. Like whole towns in Texas turn out for H.S. football because one kid has a shot to walk on somewhere. No, it's about bragging rights and community and the spectacle and pure enjoyment of the sport, not because we might actually hear about one of the kids at some distant point in the future.
