Moderate/ severe anterolateral thigh pain with hip flexion/hyperflexion. Very painful when trying to bend at hip and knees to pick something up off the floor. I have to spread legs and slightly bend knees to pick up object off floor and even that is painful.

Very sharp pain along thigh when sitting after standing for a while.

It's bad enough that I can barely shave my left leg. Forget a self pedicure, there is no way. This has to stop. Moving to a home with a bedroom on the second floor!

When did it start? What caused it? Is this the first time?

Perform 20 of these, and let me know how you feel afterwards.

No numbness or weakness presently. Have had rare sensation of shin numbness when walking years ago and most recently about a month ago. It is intermittant, not every time I walk.

Another clue: months ago when bending to reach into lower kitchen cabinets had sharp, explosive pain in lower back. Had moderate pain in lower back for a few days after first occurrence. No occasional depending on activity.

Getting old is a biotch!

Started about 3 months ago. I sleep on my side and occasionally awakened with burning pain left hip if on right side.

Am not a chiropractor kind of girls went to one years for arm and scapular pain. He performed his voodoo and didn't help. Ultimately needed surgery for shoulder impingement.

Did this just come on right out of the blue, or is there a possible mechanism of injury, i.e. a vigorous workout, a bending and lifting from the floor?

Possible sciatica. Could be from bone spur or disc protrusion....anything that would narrow the space that the nerves pass through.

No vigorous exercise. Very big dog ran into side of my legs a few times, once causing me to twist at waist fairly sharply about a year ago.

Free fall to rt or lt buttock (can't remember which) more than 10 years ago. This from standing position.

Only thing that stands out is explosive severe lower back pain when bending down to get something out of kitchen cabinet. Literally took my breath away.

I see. Will not see chiropractor. Might as well see a voodoo priestess!

You may have blown a disc.

Wouldn't a blown disc cause pain to be more often than intermittent? At this point thigh is painful when sitting from standing and vice versa but resolves within a few minutes.

See a hip specialist orthopedic surgeon and get an MRI of your hips. I've had a total right hip replacement and had symptoms like you describe that drove me to a doctor.
