Another interesting tidbit involving the hearing is that the NFL management council will handle the argument for the Saints, according to Loomis. He added how the league would consult with the Saints during the process, but the league will fight the team's battle.

sorry if already discussed.

Well the league designated him as a TE, not the Saints.

Sets a pretty dangerous precedent if the NFL doesn't fight it. RBs that are used in the slot, or even RBs that catch passes out of the backfield, or hybrid OLBs that are used in coverage. Also it could be argued that players used predominately in special teams are their own position, and a higher-risk role commands more money, etc. Granted, guys that are dedicated special teamers aren't usually franchised, unless you have a great dedicated return man.

Also, it puts someone like Patrick Peterson in the headlights. He's used in, what, 3 different roles in Arizona? How do you figure that one out?

This has been discussed before, but...

The Saints placed the tag on Jimmy, but the NFL is the one who decides what position he's tagged as. The NFLPA filed a grievance on Jimmy's behalf.

This isn't a fight between the Saints and Jimmy. It's between the NFL and the NFLPA.

Not really. This is a CBA argument.

This is NFL v NFLPA

plain and simple

It has absolutely nothing to do with the Saints or Jimmy Graham

Is the NFL going to back-stab us by declaring him a WR and then sending him to Minnesota?

NFL said Suggs was an OLB. Suggs said he was a DE. They agreed to some kind of Hybrid OLB/DE tag and worked out a new contract.

I think that's what happens to JG.

at some point in this there will be very few "positions"

Will be:
ball catchers/runners
ball throwers/runners
kickers
tacklers

That would be bad for TEs and therefore bad for the player union.

Jimmy getting an extra million or so isn't as good for the players as Jimmy signing a long term deal that sets a new mark for TEs.
